There have seen several articles here on FR where infantry commanders in Iraq have mentioned the US soldiers ability to down an enemy with one well-aimed shot destroys the morale of the opposition fighters who are used to spraying hundreds of AK rounds at each other from the hip to no effect.

There also seems to have been a fair amount of long-range aimed fire in Afghanistan. Also, I remember some articles early on (during/just after large-scale combat operations in Iraq) indicating a need for more designated marksmen at low organization levels (sqaud-level).

True, most infantry units over there are issuing at least one M-14 per platoon for a designated marksman. The M-4 carbine does the close in work, but that SDM reaches out and affects someone with predjudice...
Also, anyone who can get their hands on a M1911, does so.
