London-AP -- Head-banging heavy metal music may be o-k to listen to while driving -- but stay away from some of the older classical stuff.
Britain's R-A-C Foundation has named Richard Wagner's (VAHG'-nurz) fast-paced "Ride of the Valkyries" (VAL'-keer-eez) as the top tune not to listen to while behind the wheel -- because it says research shows loud music can cause accidents.
Three modern songs also made the top five, including "Firestarter" by the Prodigy.
The foundation also provided a top-five list of songs that can be played safely while driving -- though it cautions the volume should be kept down.
That list includes the Norah Jones hit "Come Away with Me."

Journey - Escape, Ask the Lonely, Seperate Ways, Chain Reaction
Van Halen - Dreams
aha - Living Daylights
Christopher Franke - Some of his soundtracks from Babylon 5 can get the heart goin'.
Hans Zimmer - Some of the stuff from Broken Arrow will have me going a little fast...
*pauses*
Is there anyone who can help a Freeper sneak a radar detector into the Commonwealth of Virginia? Or be willing to send me a spare? Because I ain't about to give up listening to good music.

Don't remember but I'm sure I violated a traffic law or two while listening to it.

I adore his voice...have some of his solo work as well. I've never seen him live, though - the only one of them I've seen live was Johnny - twice. But what an awesome band!

Holst's Planets - esp. "Mars" - Overture to the Magic Flute - once it gets past the Adagio section . . .
We were coming home from our riding lesson last night with all the windows down (horses are nice but smelly) and the Queen of the Night's aria Der holle Rache cranked up full blast and my kids singing along (I can't hit even one high F to save my life - my 15 year old daughter does though, my 13 year old son used to but his voice is changing and he only hits 'em occasionally now . . . :-D ) It was certainly . . . invigorating.

Some other music that adds about 10 mph to my speedometer (continued from post 81):
Jennifer Love Hewitt - Avenue of the Stars, It's Good to Know I'm Alive, Kiss Away from Heaven, How Do I Deal
Cheap Trick - Mighty Wings
Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone, Playin' with the Boys
Heck, just about ANY song on the collected soundtracks of Top Gun and Iron Eagle will do that...
I *REALLY* could use a radar detector, because I'm having a hard time thinking of songs that DON'T add enough mph to my speedometer so that I'd face the risk of enhancing the revenues of a locality or the Commonwealth of Virginia.

A rock and roll driving songs CD song list my son and I came up with: I like that list! Can we add "I Speed at Night" by Dio?
Loved Alouette's suggestion of Hava Nagila", but I'd vote to hold off on that one until we invade Saudi Arabia. ;)

It's Only Rock & Roll--by the Stones, of course.

"Hall of the Mountain King" is outrageous....:))
Carmina Burana is played throughout John Boorman's "Excalibur".
It's one of the most masterful uses of background music I've ever heard.
[In fact, after reading this thread last night, I bought the Excalibur soundtrack off of eBay].....:))

"Radar Love" like some others have mentioned. LedZep's "The Song Remains the Same" is usually good for about eighty. But none of them gets the foot on the old accelerator like Morrison singing "Mistuh Mo Jo Riiiisin'" as "LA Woman" starts to crank up...
To: socal_parrot
Whatever you do, don't play RADAR Love.

"Radar Love by Golden Earring is another ledfoot special."
Whoa.
You just opened a floodgate of memories!.....:))
That is one of the single best songs, ever.
Locomotive Breath is great for highway driving.
The Stormwatch album was born for dark, rainy days.
There's nothing better than Heavy Horses or Songs From The Wood for driving back-country roads.
Rock Island and Crest Of A Knave are good for the mountains.
[yeah...I'm a "theme" driver!]...LOL!
To: BlueLancer
I've never heard of them but I'll check them out if I can find a CD.
Try Enya's "The Celts" if you've a mind to take a walk through an isolated wood.
It gets to ya.....:))

Is that for real?!?

I confess to playing this song while driving on the LIE to Stony Brook.

Toss in "Bang A Gong" and "Don't Fear The Reaper" and I'm on board....:))

Oh yeah.
Roadhouse Blues is another one.
I'll never forget a certain 80s Blue Oyster Cult concert in DC.
They did a -great- cover of "Roadhouse Blues" and I and the 20 or so Marines stuck up in the "nosebleed section" had a blast with it.
Hell...the whole Cap Center went berserk....:))

Concur. There is no better opening line in rock 'n' roll than "Woke up this morning and I got myself a beer."
To: ovrtaxt
There are so many defunct bands I've never heard of.
I think of the 80s and I think of Billy Idol and "White Wedding" and Men Without Hats.....:))

Try the finale of Rachmaninov's Symphony #2 (complete version, preferably Previn's 1973 recording). The pedal just naturally inclines toward the metal.
