SAN FRANCISCO, April 14 (Reuters) - Growing demand for electricity, a slowdown in power plant construction, and tight supplies are worrying California power officials as summer nears, a spokesman for the state grid said on Wednesday.
The California Independent System Operator, which runs most of the electric grid, expects to issue its summer supply-and-demand forecast shortly and ISO operators are concerned about electricity shortages "if base case assumptions on supplies and consumption don't come true," said ISO spokesman Gregg Fishman.

So they had an Energy crisis 3 years ago... and today they have LESS power-plants being built? When are these people gonna learn?
Governor Arnold better take charge on this. Just remember Arnold, WWRD(What Would Reagan Do). California needs to start building plants, improving efficiency, and finding new ways to generate electricity right away. I know these measures wouldn't bring more power right away... but the recognition that it is a temporary problem that's being seriously dealt with, could help keep their energy costs a little lower than they would be.

No one wants to lend money to power plant builders in California.
Isn't that amazing! /sarcasm

The reason California is not going to have enough power is because of the way Enron has been so greedy in making billions of profits on the backs of the people of California. This is yet another example of the failed energy policies of the Bush presidency, which is so worried about securing contracts for Halliburton in Iraq to make power plants there that they have neglected the people of California.
Oh, wait, I just remembered. I'm not John Kerry. My house isn't worth $7 million. Nevermind.

Good Evening All-
California needs to build additional plants to generate more electricity, whether it is windmills, nuclear, geothermal, or whatever.
Please raise your hand if you can "spot the trend" in the following list of phrases:
Summer 1997...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 1998...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 1999...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 2000...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 2001...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 2002...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 2003...very hot, high electricity demand for AC
Summer 2004...data to be determined
Please bookmark this thread because I will provide the weather-related answer to this question in a few months when the data is available.

Hmmm, I suspect that the economy is primed to grow great guns this summer so that all those incumbent politicians feel that they will be re-elected. Only problem is that as the economy grows, so grows the demand for power. I'll bet the ISO folks are putting 2 and 2 together and figuring out what is likely to happen this summer.

Oh, Great idea Mr. Burns.
We can build MORE power plants.

We'll be out there next month trying to wake up a few people on what can actually be done. It's going to be interesting. Freepers interested should contact Senator Don Rogers.

One thing about electricity use. It's highly elastic. Whenever the price goes up, demand immediately falls, followed shortly thereafter by falling prices. The problem arises when politicians try to restrain demand when prices are constant. Let them rise. They won't stay up there very long.
To: NormsRevenge
Well, it sounds like we should permanently decommission another CA nuclear power plant. < /sarcasm >

The request to conserve power is already yielding positive results. Just the other day, Babs was seen hanging her laundry out to dry on a clothesline.
