The UN is overseeing the transition to a constitutional democracy in Afghanistan, and it is in our interest that they are involved, to the extent they are helping further democratization. The President's policy has been to get the UN involved in the transitional arrangements and election planning in Iraq as well. It helps to get the US somewhat off the hook, while building international "legitimacy" for those foolish enough to look to the UN for such things.
