Dr. James Dobson Endorses Toomey for US Senate Race in PA!
Letter from Dr. James Dobson
Posted on 04/14/2004 8:23:47 AM PDT by Preacher777
Dear Friends,
I very seldom make political endorsements, but it is with a sense of great urgency that I announce my endorsement of Rep. Pat Toomey in the all-important April 27th primary election for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.
It is imperative that Rep. Toomey win this election. He has taken on Sen. Arlen Specter, who now holds the seat, and who is opposed to nearly everything we hold dear. Specter has been a one-man roadblock to the confirmation of conservative, pro-family judges on the federal courts. Incredibly for a Republican, Specter helped to defeat one of the strongest conservative thinkers ever to be nominated to the United States Supreme Court, Robert Bork.
And that's not all. Specter opposes the federal marriage amendment, which would preserve marriage from attacks from gay activists. As I write this letter, Specter's opposition is one of the main reasons the amendment is having a difficult time moving forward in the Senate.
Pat Toomey, by comparison, would be a spendid pro-family, pro-life voice in the Senate. He is a man of great courage to take on a sitting senator, and the defeat of Arlen Specter would send a mighty signal that the days of waffling, devious, anti-family Republicans who are liberals in disguise is finally over.
Please know that I write this letter as an individual and not as a representative of the organizations I lead. But please know this as well. As fervantly as I can, I ask you to vote in the April 27th primary election for Pat Toomey for U.S. Senate.
Sincerely, James C. Dobson, Ph.D.

This is a huge endorsement for Toomey!! He is gaining ground all the time - and the endorsement of the founder of Focus on the Family will speak volumes to many who may be confused by the ads of Specter.

Dobson is a fine man, but his endorsement will only give ammo to the 'Toomey is backed by right wing kooks' whisper campaign.

If Toomey wins and with Santorum leading PA, perhaps the FReepers should start our own Free State Project there. I love Chambersburg!

Arlen Specter has no business calling himself a Republican. We finally have a chance to replace him without losing a seat in the Senate in the process.
Go Toomey!!

by the way, your tag line:
John Kerry is the Democrat's Bob Dole
Only Dole WAS actually a war hero.

I agree with another poster, that this endorsement may NOT help Toomey...sadly, the northeast is not likely to look favorably upon an endorsement that is from the "extreme right wing" as the moderates and liberals will paint it.
Dobson is one of my heros....but there are areas of the country where endorsements from conservative Christians may be harmful.

Yet another reason for term limits and a requirement that a politician be something other than a lawyer and possess some real business experience. We've come a long ways since the founding fathers, that's for sure.
Somehow I envision today's young politicians, mostly, entering politics for the gravy train (to understate matters) retirement benefits and to seek power. I'm sure the ones not in that category, many end up in it.
As I see it, there is no reason on earth why anyone should serve in a single capacity for any more than a decade.

Hmmm...except for the Bork thing (every political IMHO is allowed one screw-up, but only one) I had previously respected Specter...
I'll have to give a look at Toomey.

that is true ... but it also VERY true that there are a LOT of conservatives in PA who have "sat on their hands" and an endorsement from Dobson will move many of them! I was at a diner this morning and the gal that waited on me said she was confused about the Senate race. I told her of Dobson's endorsement, and she said, "That answers my question. Toomey gets my vote!"
To: graf008
If you previously respected Specter, you really do need to look at his record: in addition to blocking Bork, and I'm not sure in retrospect that was a bad thing, he has been influential in blocking several of Pres. Bush's nominees as well!
And he's a "tax and spend" liberal of the first order.
Take a good look.

Well...Specter did a good job with Thomas. I wouldn't say he is a liberal, but clearly he is a moderate.

I listened to Dobson everyday on the radio. However, he has working with him one of Reagan's men who was former Under Secretary of Interior and former Secretary of Energy Don Hodel. Hodel is very credible and is not known as one of the "Christian right" even though Hodel is a religious man. Wonder if Toomey could get his support too.

I hope you are right...it is time for Specter to move to Scotland and practice law there.

Where can I verify the source for this letter? I want to be sure Dr. Dobson sent this letter out.
To: graf008
Rhino Specter sighted Scottish Law in his "reasoning" as to his vote to acquit Clinton....the Constitution, obstruction of justice according to AMERICAN law were not the guiding principles for Spector...thus the Scotland reference.
To: Impeach the Boy
Ahhh...the "Not Proved" verdict. Of course, in American law that equates to "Not Guilty" but has a better tinge of "You might have done it, but we can't prove it". Specter was actually taking a swipe at Clinton by that reference....
Because I plan on living in Scotland some day - and if he is as bad as others speak, I don't ant him in my country.

One thing that was left out of this article is that the toomey campaign is only running the ad with this endorsement on Christian radio stations in central PA. This will definitely help Pat, because we've done very well in picking up voters in Philly and Pittsburgh, but surprisingly the T has been more sticky. This is meant to dislodge voters from Specter in the T, it won't be used anywehre else. The people running the Toomey campaign are not stupid.

Specter did indeed do a good job with the Clarence Thomas hearings. However, it's just about the only good thing he has ever done.
And to tell you the truth, I think it was a miscalculation on his part. He thought he was doing the liberal thing by backing a black man. He didn't realize ahead of time that the feminists would trump the blacks in this case.
After the hearings were over he did a flip-flop and spent the next couple of years apologizing for them.
