We cannot have "ordinary citizens" using firearms to protect themselves. She should have not resisted, given the perp what he wanted, then dialed 911 and wait for the police.

One does have to wonder though, why do the police carry guns? Protect themselves????

Maybe they're 'loaners' in case a perp loses his own.

Dear Cynicom,

The perp in this case wanted to first rape, then kill this women, then steal her valuables. Most people find it difficult to call 911 when they are dead.

This women, and in fact all Americans have the established right to life and liberty, rights that this man was attempting to deny through use of illegal force. Since it is not possible for the police to be in every home, citizens have the legal right to defend themselves. This is why my state (Michigan) not only upholds the second amendment, but goes the extra step in allowing citizens the right to carry concealed weapons.

In those states where gun ownership is restricted crime increases substantially. In those areas where gun ownership is allowed, crime goes down substantially.

Why should this women, or any person allow themselves to be an "ordinary citizen" when in this case ordinary would also mean beaten, raped and dead?
