I could be wrong but I don't think it's the president's responsibility to inspire us on every occasion. But I do expect to be reassured that he is continuing with the same ferver and resolve as when we started this, in light of all the unforeseen obstacles. JMO
The inspiration comes in seeing those directly around us who are still wavering and how we can make a difference with them.

What we all forget is that we're the choir - and elections are decided by the rear pulpits, the swing voters, the "moderates" who don't know what they want for breakfast.
It is these people, I believe, that the President's restrained presentation was geared to. Everybody, even dullard moderates, hates to see a sneering pack of hyenas go after somebody - and instinctually side with the one who holds their ground against them.
