FEBRUARY 2000 early : (USA : WASHINGTON DC : LAPTOP REPORTED MISSING FROM STATE DEPT BUREAU OF INTELLIGENCE AND RESEARCH OFFICE) The FBI is investigating the disappearance of a State Department laptop computer that contained "highly classified" information. State Department officials said the computer was reported missing from its Bureau of Intelligence and Research offices in early February. State Department spokesman James P. Rubin said Monday that department officials don't know whether the computer was stolen or simply misplaced -- or even if the person who has the computer recognizes what kind of information it contains. Rubin said the State Department is "extremely concerned." The FBI said it was following several leads. - 'Highly classified' State Department computer missing," CNN.com - US - 'Highly classified' State Department computer ..., April 17, 2000

U.S. officials say there is concern some of the information on the computer was so-called "code- word" material -- a classification higher than top secret. - 'Highly classified' State Department computer missing," CNN.com - US - 'Highly classified' State Department computer ..., April 17, 2000

The revelation led Rep. Charles Gilman, R-N.Y., chairman of the House International Relations Committee, to call for hearings in May into security lapses at the State Department. Gilman said in a statement that the Bureau of Intelligence and Research was found by the State Department's inspector general last year to be "not in compliance" with several security procedures. "The missing laptop is the latest in a long string of security failures at the State Department. It is obvious that the department lacks a professional environment that is sensitive to security," Gilman said. "Such security lapses are not acceptable. Whatever changes are necessary at the State Department to better protect our nation's secrets should be undertaken," Gilman said. - 'Highly classified' State Department computer missing," CNN.com - US - 'Highly classified' State Department computer ..., April 17, 2000

The Commission has lost any credibility, unless Gorelick is dismissed; but we know she won't be.

The Commission is such a joke. I just got home and logged in through AOL to get an update and the blaring headline reads "Ashcroft Plays the Blame Game". This is what they got out of today's hearing. Not Ashcroft declassifies bombshell memo!!!! I've been meaning to cancel my AOL service - guess they just gave me the final push. I'm not even going to watch any of the biased post-hearing coverage tonight. I can't stomach it.

No offense to Hume, but...Duh!!! And why wasn't FNC all over this and her when she was nominated? And not just her record while part of the Toon admin.

Me too! Isn't it amazing that once Ashcroft dropped the big one on Gorelick, that Kondrake and Birnbaum noticed how partisan the commission has become?

Mort disappointed me in trying to blame Ashcroft saying Ashcroft didn't tear down the dividing wall between agencies. What happened when Ashcroft did try to tear down the walls? Oh, right, resistance.

BTW, will this become the President's Bush's Press Conference Live Thread

Prairie.......I found the same info in 1900......and if I remember correctly .....Pincus and his wife .....even hosted the Wilsons(Joe and Valerie Plame) at a 4th of July BBQ......last summer ......or the summer of 2002.

Perhaps we should inundate the Washington Post's Ombudsman with questions about Mr. Pincus' "objectivity". You can do that at:

ombudsman@washpost.com

Have at it. Something like: "Shouldn't every article by Walter Pincus contain a disclaimer citing his and his wife's connections with prominent Democrats?"

The "wall" was strengthened after Watergate, with recommendations from the Church Committee.

An even more restrictive set of "wall" policies (apparently written by Gorelick) were put in place during the Clinton administration after the FISC court complained about their abuse of FISA investigations.
