Mel Gibson understands that we yearn for heroes and that they don't have to be perfect, just rise above their nature to do great deeds. Most of his movies are about flawed men, Ransom, Patriot, Braveheart. We need to see that we can rise above our baseness to do great deeds.

Good, that means that there is still hope for me to do something. ;-)

My wife saw the movie and she thought it was okay, if a little slow. :)

"...we yearn for heroes and that they don't have to be perfect, just rise above their nature to do great deeds."

I tend to measure all heroes against those in "The Illiad" - in particular Achilles. He was the greatest of the Greek heroes, and very human. He sat brooding in his tent because of a slight by the king (he took one of his 'prize' women) and allowed his good friend Patroclus to go into battle wearing his armor (Achilles) and end up getting killed at the hand of Hector. He then goes into a rage, kills Hector, defiles the body of Hector before the walls of Troy and ends up being slain by Hector's brother Paris (with the help of the god Appollo). A hero for sure, but also very human with as many flaws as greatness. Homer set the standard for evaluating heroes.
It should be interesting to see the treatment given to Achilles and other heroes of Greece and Troy in the soon to be released "Troy". Brad Pitt is the star - we'll see.
There are many parrallels between Troy and the Alamo, including the humanity of the heroes.

Thanks for the ping, abigail. You're absolutely right, of course - we need inspiration!! ;-)
