>>And just why does it have the lowest unemployment rate of almost anywhere
Maybe we don't count a lot of the unemployed --- all those getting SSDI, Food stamps, TANF, NAFTA-TAA, TAA aren't exactly employed but don't show up as unemployed either. How do our combined welfare rolls and other government handouts compare?
Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 308,000 in March, and the unemployment rate was about unchanged at 5.7 percent... http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
Government unemployment numbers are garbage. Where exactly did these 300k people come from who were "not unemployed" in February, but materialized in March to suck up all the newly created jobs, keeping the unemployment rate level?

I saw it discussed the other day that we're losing jobs at such a rate right now due to outsourcing and it's repercussions that we have to create 350,000 a month at current just to have 0 growth. The numbers you're responding to appear to bear that up. And people who run out their unemployment benefits and still don't have jobs are not counted as unemployed. But, hey, forclosures are up .. party on dude.. right..

Most likely people on welfare who did not think they could get a job now are actually looking for one. Alot changed in winter, many people got job so perhaps their friends and such are now looking for job too?
In general this development(300,000+ new jobs) and stable unemployment rate is very good. Tons of new jobs and many of the disilusioned people are looking for work once again.
I am not sure how much of it is due to the fiscal stimulus from the administration. But if there is a huge victory that President can celebrate is that country is out of the recession for good(been out of it for a LONG time now) and the US economy is just gathering speed. In fact by the middle of summer I am sure Fed will start trying to slow things down to avoid overheating. Interest rates will go up and soon. From economic point of view if re-elected the best thing for administration would be to axe spending on social programs, "war on drugs" etc keep the tax cut but minimize the deficit. Press the breaks on the spending side, but keep military financing at the level needed to win the war.

Well, the census department says we now have a net increase of one more person in this country every 8 seconds, or about 217,000 per month. This includes accounting for deaths, births, and immigration.
So, this could account for part of it.
