Ephedra was linked to 155 deaths over ten years. Compare that to 427 deaths attributed to Tylenol in just one year (1999).

There is no justification for the ban on ephedra. It is effective, safe, and cheap. My cynical side tells me there was a lot of lobbying by the pharmaceutical industry to shut it down.
