WASHINGTON (AFP) - Two US soldiers and seven US contractors working for a Halliburton subsidiary are unaccounted for in Iraq (news - web sites), Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, the head of US forces in the country, said.

Sanchez told reporters in Washington from Baghdad that the seven contractors worked for Kellog, Brown and Root, part of the Halliburton energy and services giant which has major contracts for the US military in Iraq.

US military authorities said Friday that two soldiers were missing following an attack by Iraqi insurgents on their convoy near Baghdad international airport the same day.

Meanwhile, the head of US Central Command, General John Abizaid, said Monday some of the response of Iraqi forces to insurgents in Iraq had been "a great disappointment."

"In the south, a number of units, both in the police force and also in the ICDC (Iraqi Civil Defence Corps) did not stand up to the intimidators of the forces of (Moqtada) Sadr's militia and that was a great disappointment to us," he told reporters in Washington from Baghdad.

The only people in Iraq willing to fight are Americans, a few allies and terrorists.
