"We do not want their capitalism, we do not want communism. We have our own ideas about how we want our country to be run in a Muslim way. We support the Shia leader Muqtada Sadr, not because of his ideas; they are not good or bad. We are supporting him with money, weapons and men because he is against the Americans."

What are their ideas?

How do they propose to promote them?

If they win, it's a terrible civil war between them and their former allies; surely they realize this?

It's really hard for me to understand their motivation.

Sure, it's understandable that no citizen want an occupying foreign force in the country. But unless these people were Saddam's henchmen, how could they not appreciate the fact that those foreign forces removed a despicable dicatator who killed countless countrymen?

Is there somehow a suspicion that the US plans to run the place permanently? At most, we'd like a couple of bases where we can place a quick-reaction force if there is trouble in the region. We'd like nothing more than for Iraq to govern itself and for it to become an example of arab democracy.

Why would any Iraqi oppose that?
