The media savviness of the latest ShiaSunni campaign against the US is astute and is creating the best publicity for the irakis who oppose the US.

US needs an unambiguous victory ASAP.

I had to double check the author of this to make sure it wasn't written by Fisk.

It's really hard for me to understand their motivation.

Sure, it's understandable that no citizen want an occupying foreign force in the country. But unless these people were Saddam's henchmen, how could they not appreciate the fact that those foreign forces removed a despicable dicatator who killed countless countrymen?

Is there somehow a suspicion that the US plans to run the place permanently? At most, we'd like a couple of bases where we can place a quick-reaction force if there is trouble in the region. We'd like nothing more than for Iraq to govern itself and for it to become an example of arab democracy.

Why would any Iraqi oppose that?

That's coming. While they've handed us a few dozen fatalities, reports from those who've left Fallujah indicate between 600 and 800 of their combatants dead in the local hospital. The town is critically short on food and medicine, and we are not in such a hurry for a clearcut victory that we need to be walking into any ambushes.

It's coming.

Then I feel some slight degree of sympathy with Hans Yost: "When I hear the word 'culture', I release the safety catch of my Browning".

"We do not hate the Americans and British, we hate the ideas they have brought here. We will now fight every person who tries to bring those ideas, including the Iraqi Governing Council.

Caught in their own rhetoric.

Perhaps the 95% of the Iraqi people feel differently.

I know that the American public didn't accept the ideals of terrorist thugs when they acted out that same opinion on 9/11.

All in all, simply stated, they are saying "if you are not a terrorist then you will die"!

They don't want to return to days of Saddam and having their relatives tortured to death in Abu Ghraib prison, and they don't want any Western capitalist ideas or democracy either.

They only want a peaceful Islamic state, where all can live equally, terrified and enslaved, women in Hefty bags and armed men with towels over their angry faces. How lovely for them.

We do not want their capitalism, we do not want communism. We have our own ideas about how we want our country to be run in a Muslim way. We support the Shia leader Muqtada Sadr, not because of his ideas; they are not good or bad. We are supporting him with money, weapons and men because he is against the Americans."

Did anyone bother to explain to these people that in a Democracy they can choose what kind of system they want. The only thing were trying to impose is the very right to choose the things they were talking about in the beginning of this paragraph.

I agree. Any comparison to Vietnam is foolish. In Vietnam you had a national army, supported by two super powers launching attacks from a sovereign state that we couldn't attack. These terrorists in Iraq have no where to go, limited (if any) supplies, no real reinforcements and no peace from the constant noise of battle.

Will they like us when we're done? I didn't think that winning strategic goals was the same as winning a popularity contest.

"they would fight the coalition, the Iraqi Governing Council - whose members they denounce as collaborators and placemen - and any of Saddam Hussein's supporters." Who wouldn't they fight, I wonder?

As the liberal media in this country increases it's attack on our President there will be a corresponding increase in the attacks on our troops in Iraq.

The time to make those responsible aware of the consequences of their actions is now, before any more troops are attacked.

Thanks,Archy.They aren't fighters,they are just murderous thugs.

My condolences to the German families.

Not all are murderous thugs, though there's certainly no shortage of such. But there are innocent casualties as well, and there will be more.

We've moved up a third Marine battalion, and there are more surprises in store for those still in Fallujah. Nasty ones.

Sun Apr 11, 4:09 PM ET

Wounded two year old Iraqi boy Ali Abdullah is carried by his father to a clinic after he was hurt by an overnight blast that destroyed their neighbor's home in the besieged town of Falluja, April 11, 2004. Civilians fled Falluja when a truce halted a week of fierce fighting between U.S. forces and Sunni Muslim guerrillas in which more than 600 Iraqis had been killed.
