Ya... PROFILING.

Muslim? Middle-Eastern? 17-44? Male?
DING! DING! DING!

That won't catch the sophisticated terrorists, who are the dangerous ones.

Even presuming we're talking about Muslinms, how tough would it be to take a black, Asian, Bosnian, or half Russian (European looking) 25 year old male and give him false credentials? If they could train him to speak with an American accent, he could even be given fake American credentials. Dress him in "business casual" clothes and you'll get past any "profile".

Profiling would catch the known terroists---a list of identities that has grown quite large in recent months. It would immediately remove from the equation all known terrorists. Thoroughly vet everyone who LOOKS like a terrorist who wants to board an aircraft. That would severly hamper the ragheads. Profiling would have prevented 9/11, as some of the 19 hijackers were known by government agencies as bad guys.
