...One guy said he killed about a dozen of these things because they kept coming into their tent.

While they knew they weren't poisonous, they still freaked out the soldiers -- especially the new ones...

Ya think?

chadsworth also posted about these "monster spiders" HERE:
Op.Infinite Freep: Fresno Support our Troops/President Rally for 04/09/04:

The Mid-East Camel Spider.

AS if our troops didn't have enough to worry about, they have to be concerned with these things.

I did not realize there were spiders this large anywhere.

Notpoliticallycorewrecked has some details about this thing since one of her friends was briefed prior to going to the Middle East.

God bless our troops one and all. And may those who constantly speak out for purely political purposes against the liberation of Iraq realize they are not helping the situation.

Camel spiders are nocturnal predators of other arthropods including scorpions …

If I were there I’d encourage them to hang around. I was nailed by a tiny ( about 1 ½”) black scorpion - a lot of pain, and I was immobilized for quite a while.

I would sleep with a .45 under my pillow if something like that was creeping into my tent.

Some species kill and feed on lizards and it is speculated that others kill mice and birds

Holy cow! My cats would be impressed.

Eccchhhh....I just hope I never come across one.

They're too big to squish with my shoe.

And the scorpions can just stay out of my way, too.

I've seen dik-diks, jackals and some pretty cool lizards, though.

But it is now thought that the only risk of injury resulting from them is caused by shock or infection following a bite.

That, and the fatal coronary I'd have finding one of them in my sleeping bag.

You don't suppose we could train these critters to bite Islamists?

some guys aren't afraid of any human, but a bug or something will really scare them.

1967, while in Basic training at Ft Polk, we got lots of guys from up north or the big cities.

One tough guy from Brooklyn was walking fire guard in the early morning hours and came upon an armadillo. He woke up the whole bivouc encampment because there was "some kind of monster" out there making strange noises.

Thank you for the headache and upchuck. There went breakfast.

Anyway, I can now understand why Saddam's hiding place was called "the spider hole." Yuck!!!!

I remember those things when I was over there. Probably the creepiest things I've ever seen.

We always killed them. I poured some hot coffee on one of them, too. :)
