If these council members have any power, why don't they broker a truth?
I don't recall hearing their outcry over the slaughter and torching of innocent Americans.
To: yonif
They'll get a ceasefire the moment we're done killing jihadis.

Added al-Yawer: "We all agree that those who did that (killed the four Americans) were criminals who deserve to be arrested. But the result was the mass punishment of a city. ... And that we refuse." The punishment ain't over either.

Hence the "temporary cessation" of operations in Fallujah.
Hopefully this situation can be resolved.

Who expecetd them to do anything else?
If they want to have any political future in Iraq after the US leaves, they have to criticise our move. Their criticism will have very little effect on what the US actually does.

The cease-fire will be acknowledged.
Of course it will be after operations in Ramadi and Fallujah are completed and Sadr facing justice.
To: GeronL
Didn't Sadr himself call for a ceasefire? He's clearly not too eager for martyrdom.

It's politically incorrect to give the impression that you care more about the occupier than your own countrymen - even if those countrymen are goons.
It's like how black Americans mostly shun their own underclass but can get very angry if white cops treat their gangbangers too roughly.

The problem is that it signals to the violent ones a political weakness.
There must be a united front: No violence, no exceptions, no excuses, and it gets punished.
The GC seems to be saying coalition cannot engage in 'all means necessary' to ensure security. We need to explain to the GC that security is harmed if we dont have freedom to pursue the fighters.
I'm afraid the Al Jazeera agit-prop has pushed the political ball in a particular direction. This kind of 'negotiation' nonsense will lead to the legitimization of the militias. If the GC doesnt have the stomach for disarming them by force, "Lebanon" awaits.

I'd just like to tell the council"Hey dudes, let me inform you, there was a cease-fire on our part for months and we were the ones being shot at, bombed and killed and now we're going to fight back until they wish they'd never thought of harming an American. Put that in your in your pipe and smoke it to your hearts content.
This is so bogus. It is like some bully trying to kick your a$$ everyday for months and when you hit back they run to their mama crying. Well let them get a little American medicine and see if they want to keep asking for more because I'll bet we can oblige them.
