The Republican runoff election face-off for the job of Texas Railroad commissioner is a match between David and Goliath, except that Goliath in this case is the better candidate.
The heavyweight is Victor Carrillo, who was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry. He is the recommendation of the Caller-Times Editorial Board on this final day of early voting.
Carrillo also carries the support of the state GOP party, which wants his victory to dispel any notion that minorities can't win the nod of Republican voters. But the former Taylor County judge and Abilene city councilman has plenty of reasons to run besides his ethnicity, including his background in the oil industry and his support of a diversified energy policy includine development of renewable and alternative sources of energy.
The David is Robert Butler, a retired state employee from Palestine whose last job was chasing deadbeat parents for the attorney general's office. Butler made the runoff by a whisker (Carrillo had 49.60 percent of the vote) without hardly spending a dollar, but then he had few to spend. Butler is woefully underfunded, but he is also underqualified for the job of overseeing the state's oil and gas industry.
Carrillo was the best choice in the March 9 election and he remains the best choice. The winner faces Democrat Bob Yarborough.
