This thread will probably get yanked, but for what it is worth Serge makes the most cogent critique of the WOT. Michael Savage makes the second best, his show last night was superb in three hours he outlined why the DC elite is failing. I agree with Mike we need fewer Dr. Rices and we need more men with eye patches, we need a Moshe Dayan type as our National Security head honcho.

: FBI chief Robert Mueller says he is concerned about terrorist attacks this summer on one or even both of the forthcoming political conventions, the Democrats’ in Boston in late July and the Republicans’ in New York a month later.

I doubt Boston has to worry. Why would they attack what, in essence, is their OWN primary?

Bookmarked. Dead on.

Freepers will recall that, immediately post-9/11 I called for several measures that people thought 'draconian'. These included:

1. Withdrawing the visas of all citizens of terror-supporting states.
2. Deporting same.
3. Perform deep background checks on all 'naturalized citizens' from those nations.
4. Cessation of issuance of all visas to citizens of those nations.
5. Utilization of the National Guard and other means to secure the borders.
6. Creation of what I called a 'Super Mossad' to silently and swiftly assassinate terrorists all over the world.
7. Several other bellicose suggestions, including nuclear and psychological measures, meant to rock the Islamists (with whom we are in a state of undeclared war) and give us time to regroup and mobilize.

We are at war and in deep denial. I suppose they will have to bring down the Sears Tower or the Golden Gate bridge with a satchel nuke before they get our full attention.

There are--in all likelihood--dozens of intact terrorist cells still operating in the U.S. What are we doing about it? How long before one of them launches a Smallpox attack in a major U.S. city?

Can we prevent a crude nuke from being smuggled into Long Beach Harbor? (no).

So indeed, we are losing--because we are fighting in a 'civilized' way against barbarians. Ghod, I hope Bush isn't choosing targets the way LBJ did...

WHY IS THE WEST LOSING THE WAR ON TERROR?

Those who read the article in its entirety will have to agree with its premises and conclusions, I think. The answer to the question posed by the title is this: we are losing the war on terror because we are civilized and they are not. And we both act accordingly. It is an asymmetrical event. Until we take the gloves of civilization off (and when it gets bad enough, we will, and so will even the pussified French) and hold the Dome of the Rock, Medina and Mecca hostage, we will continue to have the same success with Islamic terror as one would if he tried to push back the ocean tide with a broom.

---When it came to the secondary issues of specific policies, the most important of all—Israel—was strangely absent from the Commission’s deliberations. Different aspects of the U.S. policy in the Middle East were mentioned in various testimonies, but nobody asked the one question that is the mother of all others: is America’s “special relationship” with Israel in any way connected to the terrorist threat? The bipartisan assumption was unstated but clear: the United States should continue to provide open-ended and near-unconditional support to Israel because our unsinkable aircraft carrier is at war with the same terrorists as us.

This may well be true, but an open-minded Commission should not assume a priori that it is true. It should look, without prejudice, into the possibility that a different, less passionate relationship would be beneficial to a long-term anti-terrorist strategy, by reducing the perception of a permanent American bias in Middle Eastern affairs that breeds rage that fuels terrorism. But just as it had failed to look into the option of denying Islamic fifth columnists a foothold at home, the Commission did not explore the ways to stop alienating over one billion Muslims abroad. The possibility that U.S. foreign policy should be reassessed in order to avoid creating conditions for specifically anti-American Islamic hostility was left untouched.---

Our Stalingrad will come if we dump Israel. Might as well turn the Capitol into a mosque and have done with it.

The goblins are scattered, many of their assets have been seized, their cash flow has been increasingly interrupted, their leaders have been killed or captured (more to come on that), and they are about to suffer a very "unconstitutional" backlash in Europe and Asia and have yet to pull off an encore of September 11.

They likely will succeed in making another spectacle, but just ponder that, even on September 11, how many airliners didn't crash, how many buildings didn't come down (the Pentagon was only damaged and still stands today), and, whenever they plan or attempt another attack, they leave themselves vulnerable to arrest, maiming (no paradaisical glory there) or death (Surprise!! No virgins!!), and risk having their organization(s) revealed, detected, and compromised every time they try to pull off another mass-murder event.

Airliners crash, buildings explode, trains are derailed, school buses fail to outrun trains, and innocents are murdered every day without help from the terrorists.

As I tried to state on a local (DC) radio talk show (before I was cut off) during the "sniper" days, a sane person and populace can remain sane and functional if and only if they put things into perspective re: the incidence of death from "un-natural causes" of all kinds.

Indeed, during the "sniper crisis," only thirteen persons were killed by Malvo and Mohamad over a period of three weeks, and the dynamic duo operated over an area that was home to nearly five million trembling people.

Thus, the chances of being "sniped" during that time of "terror" was 5,000,000 people/13 victims/21 days. This works out to a probability of about 1 in 18,315 of a person being nailed by the "snipers" on a given day during their "reign of terror."

A person in their area of operation was far more likely to die as a result of a traffic accident, a fire, a fall down the stairs, the actions of an angry relative or lover, botched medical care, a pit bull attack, a drive-by shooting (especially in DC), and many other causes that are with us 24/7/365 . Not that scary, eh? And consider the thousandsa that are killed in earthquakes somewhere every few months. What I do find unsettling is the erosion of physical and mental courage on the part of so many of my countrymen, as evidenced by our obsession with terrorism, death, and whether we again will allow four groups of virtually unarmed mongrels to crash four airliners while outnumber at a level of at least 25-to-1.

After "reading the entire article" with an "open mind", especially the chronology part, I conclude that WE (America) are not losing squat. The Euroweenies, however, appear to be getting their @$$es kicked. Which seems to prove that if they took American-like stances (IE not like the wusses they are) then they wouldn't be doing so badly.

Must ignore......geez, man, we've only been fighting the war for a couple of years. You may have a point, though, considering all the terrorist attacks in this country since 911.

Just make that Spain, France, Belgium, Germany and Austria.
I think most of the rest are at least putting up a good fight.

The Commission has avoided key issues, and failed America. Its report is yet to be issued, but its tone can be predicted. It will apportion blame for the details, there will be a lot of partisan haggling and horse-trading in the course of its drafting, the Democrats may even issue a minority report blaming Bush. As for the real questions and meaningful survival strategies, there will be none.

Thanks for this one.

the existence of the multi-million-strong Muslim diaspora in the U.S. and elsewhere... provides the terrorists with the recruits, the infrastructure, and the relative invisibility without which they would not be able to operate.

This needs to be emphasised!

We will not prevail in the WOT until we solve this problem.
