"Back in the day" in the teams, scruffy was in. It was the exact opposite of the "strac" (sp?) Army look. The idea was to wear an old faded jungle ripstop cammy set, that looked like you just pulled it from the bottome of a sea bag. Jungle boots with no polish, sort of the "unitentional suede" look. "Polished with a brick" as we said. Beard. Hair pushing whatever the limit was. Personal sidearms all over. Personal load bearing gear. No insignia of any kind, none. (Only removeable black subdued insignia for garrison.) Boonie hats rolled up to personal style, or various other eccentric excuses for military head gear. Sweat shirt hood sticking out the back in cool weather. Unbloused cammie pantlegs hanging over the unpolished boots, or better yet, green hightop Converse type sneakers. (These were in specwar supply.) It was almost "anti military" looking. "Who are those guys??" We looked very nasty, for the 1980s. Seems funny, looking back.

Some of the guys look more like Shaggy from Scooby Doo than anykind of 'real' warrior. Some look like they should have a skateboard under their arm instead of a nine or whatever they favor. And Oakleys. Or Gargoyles.

The anti uniform look is almost a uniform look, like school kids all trying to be 'different' and all end up looking the same!

He won't ... looking an Arab straight in the eye is actually a sign of aggression.
