'Negotiate with Bin Laden': Mowlam Apr 8 2004

Former Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam has called on the British and American governments to open talks with Osama bin Laden and al Qaida around a negotiating table.

The former Labour MP for Redcar said that by carrying out military campaigns in the Middle East, Britain and the US were acting as a "recruitment officer for the terrorists".

In a television interview which will be broadcast on Easter Sunday, she described the current hardline approach to the war on terror as "completely counter-productive".

Ms Mowlam told Tyne Tees TV's Sunday Interview that Britain and America must open a dialogue with their enemies.

Interviewer Tony Cartledge asked if she could imagine "al Qaida and Osama bin Laden arriving at the negotiating table".

She replied: "You have to do that. If you do not you condemn large parts of the world to war forever.

"Some people couldn't conceive of Gerry Adams or Martin McGuinness getting to the table but they did."

She added: "If you go in with guns and bombs, you act as a recruitment officer for the terrorists."

Ms Mowlam said she was ready to criticise the Government she once served in her new one-woman show, particularly about its policy on Iraq and the Middle East.

She also confirmed on the programme that she has completely recovered from a brain tumour. She stepped down as an MP in 2001.

She's absolutely right. Bombing Hitler and overthrowing the Nazi regime only made the Germans even more determined to support Nazism. That's why Nazism has become the dominant party in Europe. Attacking Italy only strengthened Fascism and resulting in Mussolini becoming even more of a hero there -- just look at how respectfully he was murdered.

Only surrender and appeasement will lead to Peace. Victory just means more War.

Tony Blair has to be ashamed that this woman was once in his Cabinet. He should send her to France, where appeasement and collaboration with evil is more acceptable than in the U.K. or the U.S.A.

Saddam Hussein was "willing to negotiate". The proceedings were brief.

The only thing that could potentially be up for negotiation (according to them) would be whether our women could wear a burka that isn't colored black of blue.

"Their kamikaze pilots almost halted the American juggernaut"

What kind of drugs is this idiot on, the kamikaze pilots never came close to stopping anything. The most success they had was against picket destroyers that rarely had air support and were usually alone

The spirit and "wisdom" of Neville Chamberlain has entered a body in our time.

I am highly in favor of this.

If she can set up the meeting, I am sure that the US would send representatives.

Good thought. Let this twit set up the meeting and wait there with OBL and whomever else wants to "negotiate". We'll make sure we know exactly where they are. Once located, we can send our representative, model BLU-82, special delivery, to "negotiate".

Hey, with 3000 dead on 9/11, it seems only a fair venue.

I think Ms. Mowlan must be hitting the Guiness Stout too much. I suppose she would have sat down with Hitler at Munich and negotiated with him.

This guy is an idiot. The Japanese also used spiritual faith in war. Their kamikaze pilots almost halted the American juggernaut, giving their lives because they believed their emperor was the "Son of Heaven." When the Son of Heaven made peace with the Americans, almost to a man they stopped fighting. However, if the Emperor had overruled his generals and commanded his people to fight to the end, they might have obeyed. American deaths could have reached a million, and the Japanese figure would have been many times that.

I don't think that the kamikazes ever inflicted more than minor damage on the American forces. A couple of destroyers sunk, a couple of larger ships damaged. Ultimately it probably hurt the Japanese more, depleting their stocks of aircraft even further at a time when they couldn't replace them. And Hirohito did overrule his generals, who wanted to keep fighting to the end, and instead followed the advice of his civilian advisors, who convinced him that the war was lost. His Stalingrad example makes even less sense. True, the Soviet people might have believed Stalin to be some sort of quasi-mystical figure, but what won Stalingrad was less the Soviet army's religious faith and more Hitler's stupid generalship, pulling forces off the flanks to feed into the meat grinder of street fighting until the Russians could launch a double envelopment that trapped the German Sixth Army (and damned near trapped all of Army Group South).

Well, inasmuch as Osama has sworn to destroy us, I'm thinking we might be just a teensy bit shy of negotiation room here. Maybe if he promised to only kill us just a little bit dead she'd think that an improvement?

Truly astounding....though we have our share of these in this country. They are called liberal Democrats. See Muqtada al-Kennedy's recent statements.

I think we should. Get all our enemies in a roundtable to express their grievences. Then we kill and bury each and every one of the cowards in pig fat!

I've invited Bin Laden over for tea several times but he never returns my messages. It's always--"he's not in his cave right now." How can you get together and do lunch if the guy won't return your messages? It does take two to tango.

Bin Ladin can negotiate with the barrels of our soldiers' guns.

"Please, don't hurt me!"
"By Allah, don't shoot!"
"You're breaking my arm...stop...I swear I'll come along peacefully!"

You can't negotiate with bullies except through force.
