Clarke Says Rice’s Testimony Bolstered His Claims

April 8 — National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice repeatedly told the 9/11 commission today that there was no "silver bullet" that could have averted the deadly Sept. 11 terror attacks on America.

But former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke, who is also an ABCNEWS consultant, said he tried to warn the president of the imminent threat of al Qaeda. He testified during the Sept. 11 commission's public hearings that the Bush administration paid too much attention to Iraq and underestimated the threat from al Qaeda, before and after the Sept. 11 attacks.

After Rice's three-hour testimony concluded, ABCNEWS' Peter Jennings asked Clarke what he thought about Rice's testimony before the commission.

The following is an unedited, uncorrected transcript of Clarke's interview with ABCNEWS' Peter Jennings as it aired on Thursday, April 8, 2004:

Jennings: Now let's talk a little bit about Richard Clarke. Even if you heard only a little of the testimony today, much of the testimony centered on the testimony of Dr. Clarke. Dr. Rice, you heard comment on it. She certainly contradicted it in some cases.

Mr. Clarke is an adviser to ABCNEWS on the subject of terrorism and has been for many months. I don't think we necessarily expected that he was going to make the kind of news that he did when he appeared before this commission, but we — you will recall that when he testified before the commission, the Bush administration took ample opportunity to attack in a very public, very widespread way what he had said before the commission.

So in trying to understand some of the truth and the facts about this commission today, we've asked Dr. Clarke, who, as I said, has been a paid consultant to ABCNEWS over many months, to come back and try to answer a couple questions about what he has heard today and he is in Boston.

Mr. Clarke, can you hear me?

Clarke: Yes, Peter, I can.

Jennings: I just want to ask you, you heard people using your testimony in a variety of different ways.

...did not convene the Cabinet. She admitted that she didn't convene the Cabinet.

I seem to recall that the Clinton cabinet met only 3 times one year - was it 1998, or 1999? And the purpose of those meetings was to lie to the Cabinet members, and apologize for lying to them.

The audacity with which this man contradicts himself and objective fact, along with his treatment as credible by the mainstream press, shows the complete disdain they have for the thinking abilities of the American people.

They are showing their confidence in our public schools. They are comfortable in the knowledge that most of the country has been poorly educated.

"Rice clearly stated that it was an alert Customs Agent that caught the Millenium Bomber. That Customs and Border agents had not been put on alert. The "shaking the trees" meetings had nothing to do with it."

She went on to say, ...."I checked with Customs and they weren't actually on alert." So much for DickClark's puffed up assertion on his thoroughness and the decisive steps he took.

If You want analogies then Condi played "Lenin" to Clarke's "Czar".

Who would relish in the title of "Czar", considering history? Someone who spends most of their time admiring their own reflection?

For some folks, titles are everything. Makes them feel important.

Well well--- CBS, ABC and NBC all had a financial stake in building this guy up. Besides their extreme liberal bias beimng supported, we now see thew nature of the fianancial benefit they gaining by legitimizing and promoting Clarke.

Dirty litle business for these networks.

You were reading my mind. He does remind me of the flimflam man behind the curtain. Or perhaps that weaselly character, Frank Burns, from the old TV show M*A*SH.

Clarke "thinks" he's Superman. This proves he's mentally unstable.

If Clarke means her testimony bolsters the claims that he is a lying POS, then YES, it did just that.....besides, WHICH testimony...the first one in which the little weasel testified 180% from the last one...or what he told reporters on background that was totally at odds with what he is saying on TV now that he is a paid whore for the media and the democrats?

He was demoted because it was clear that the measures he was proposing fell short from a philosophical as well as a strategic standpoint. No suggestion Clarke made involved the principle of placing equal responsibility on terrorists and the states that harbor them, which is the direction in which the Bush team was headed PRIOR to 9-11.

The profound lack of respect which precipitated 9-11 was aided and abetted by inadequate thinkers like Clarke, I'm beginning to think he knows he was at fault and is carrying out his own tactic of preemption.

It sounds like you are describing 1998. Clinton was in hiding from early on that year over the Monica incident.
