Attack Approved After Five Marines Shot From the Mosque

FALLUJAH, Iraq, April 7--U.S. Marines called in an air strike on a mosque compound that was being used as a firing position by Sunni insurgents here Wednesday, as forces of a U.S.-led coalition battled a growing, separate rebellion by Shiite Muslims in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

The compound of the Abdul-Aziz Samarrai mosque in this flashpoint city was targeted after advancing Marines took fire from insurgents holed up inside it for several hours, Marines said. The fighting began when a rocket-propelled grenade fired from inside the compound hit a military vehicle, wounding five Marines, a military spokesman told reporters.

I see nothing wrong with hitting a holy place if it is being used by the military to kill our troops. Many a church was bombed out during ww2 so whats the big deal now.

The decision by the " insurgents" ( I think GW calls them " thugs and assassins) to use the " Holy Place" for Cover and Concealment negated any spiritual value this place had.
If you are a Good Soldier, you NEUTRALIZE THE THREAT, regardless of where it is coming from. As Patton said " Victory is making the other B---d die for his country"

Absolutely. We've avoided destroying "holy" places all this time and do they hate us any less??....NO-O-O. Those places are no more holy than the outhouses I used to use as a kid. In fact they're one in the same...one big smelly holy in the ground. They've obviously been using these "holy" places to collect and store weapons caches and recruit insurgents. Nothing should be off limits if someone fires from it or fires and retreats to it. I understand they made these off limits because they wanted to keep what little Arab support we had together, but (F)To Heck with them now. Too many of our boys are dying. The gloves come off.

Reports are saying the mosque was never hit. It's still quite intact. I figured they'd be finding pieces of it in Iran by now.
