Quite frankly, they didn't need to. The damage on the homefront had already been done. However, the NVA only increased the flow of men and supplies down Ho's trail after Tet68. We (the US) lost the will. The ARVN never had it to lose.

In fact Johnson never had the will. The US was never allowed to cross the 50 yard line with the ball. That's what comes from playing touch football with the Kennedys.

The ARVN were promised US Air Support if the NVA showed up with Tanks. The RATS after removing Nixon, refused to fund the promised Air Support.
