Yes, but it is unfair to compare the two because they have completely different operational and deployment strategies. A Marine MEB is almost more of a small Army Division with Air, Armor and Support organic to it. A Marine MEF is really an Army Corp, not a DIV. The 82 would typically rely on those other sorts of units to be deployed with them in the Order of Battle.

It was decisive - slow motion decisive - but decisive just the same. It destroyed the Presidency of LBJ (a good thing) and the credibility of the military for many years.

You're right, though, it's not Vietnam. It is Iraq, however.

Kerry is going to Georgetown to make an economic speech. How relevant. Zzzzzzzz.

I've obtained a copy of this speech. I'll provide the key points:

-Bush jobs = bad.
-Kerry jobs = good.
-Details provided after election.
-I served in Vietnam.

Sky News just talked about that Blair and Bush have just had a phone meeting. There might be talk of sending additional UK troops, even though the UK Armed forces are badly stretched.

The Associated Press 4/7/04 8:01 AM

BAQOUBA, Iraq (AP) -- A U.S. military helicopter crashed Wednesday and was seen burning on the ground in central Iraqi city of Baqouba, where Shiite militiamen and U.S. troops were battling, a witness said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The helicopter crashed immediately after an explosion was heard, according to an AP photographer at the site. He saw the helicopter on the ground in flames. U.S. troops closed off the site.

It was not immediately known what caused the crash.

U.S. troops and Shiite militiamen clashed Wednesday in Baqouba, 30 miles northeast of Baghdad. During the fighting, militiamen hit the governor's office with rocket-propelled grenades.

I don't think an MEF is anywhere near the size of a Corp. A Corp is three divisions. And correct me if I'm wrong, an MEF is pretty much self-contained for logistics and supply for about 45 days. The 82nd is definetly not.

I think you're right but...

"how can a bunch of (relatively) poorly armed guys with old crappy equipment hope to stand up to the best fighting men in the world?"

Maybe they're counting on their fifth column in the United States to destroy American resolve.

They wanted to send troops but didn't have the airlift capacity. Plus they couldn't get them into Falluja without sneaking past the Marines. They'll have to sit this one out. So as of now we're only fighting Iraq, Iran and Syria. Business before pleasure.

Sorry, leadpenny, but these two are a few volts short of being a reliable power supply.

Thanks for an intelligent contribution.

Kerry served 4 months for the US and South Vietnam and has served the rest of his life for the North. Proudly still serving.
