The theory was that the 82nd would allow the people there to have a chance to take care of themselves and to not make matters worse. But the terrorists there obviously saw that as weakness.

I seem to recall some posts wondering why the 82nd was being replaced with 1MarDiv...why MARINES?

I think now we know. And, FWIW, the Marines have been training on this urban warfare stuff for years.

Everybody is a military expert these days!

Especially those who're not getting shot at.

It is the 1st Armored..they were fixing to rotate out, and their reliefs are already in place, so it's like we have an extra division.

The Marines replacing the 82nd isn't in itself a big deal. Both are tough combat units. The Army also trains for warfare in urban environments, though I agree that the Marines began doing it earlier. I also do think the Marines are among the very best fighters in the world.

Look, I'm an old Marine myself. But this is not the time to be pulling out Service rivalries or comparisons. Right now all Service colors are red, white and blue.

The 82nd did a marvelous job under grueling conditions, and God bless those troops and their families.

Continued prayers for all coalition forces and innocent Iraqis during these battles.

You're right, PR. Our greatest threat is the "Kerry/Kennedy/Democrat political opportunists" who comprise a fifth column in the United States.

I'm saying there were posts here questioning why we were putting in the Marines for a peacekeeping job.

Because FNC was in a commercial. I try to obtain news from a variety of sources, but not to worry. FNC is my main source.

"CNN is saying the Iraqis in Fallujah are losing BIG.."

Well, of course they are. They may be able to hurt us a little. Some of our guys have been and will be killed and that's a horrible thing.. but how can a bunch of (relatively) poorly armed guys with old crappy equipment hope to stand up to the best fighting men in the world?

They can't.

I guess they must think that if we lose enough guys, we'll cut and run. ..it ain't gonna happen.

Its sad to me that these naive peasants are conned by their religious leaders into believing they have a chance. They're going to die in droves and all for nothing, in the end.

This whole thing is like a cancer. You think its whupped and then it hits you in the face again. Seems we need to use a massive dose of radiation to suck the life out of this tumor.

Godspeed to the gentlemen of the USMC. The prayers of our home are with you. The missus, who is a prayer warrior of the highest magnitude, and my young ones will offer prayers to the only true God.

Fox reported the Syrians also.

Also, the governor is in control of Ramali, despite rumors to the contrary, per Fox.

I disagree. If the funding would have been there the strikes would not have been necessary in the first place - and the Democrats did not have the constitutional power to stop them in the first place. Ford just caved. They did not cut funding all at once but over a period, the same period that the USSR and China radically increased their funding. The hatred of the old east coast establishment for Nixon because he was one of the "new men" of the
"sunbelt technology" elites that formed during WW2 cannot be discounted in the establishment struggle that found its locus in the Vietnam War. It is simplistic to regard Tet as a major cause of the shameful conclusion of that conflict. I stand by my assertion

Heck, we've Marines in Haiti doing peace-keeping missions. They're not exempt from that. The biggest difference between the 82nd and this Marine unit is how light the 82nd is.
