COPENHAGEN (Reuters) -
The costs of the war in Iraq (news - web sites) have outweighed the benefits of removing Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), former U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix told a Danish newspaper.
"It's positive that Saddam and his bloody regime is gone, but when one weighs the costs, it's clearly the negative aspects that dominate," Blix told daily Jyllands-Posten in an interview.
The Swedish diplomat has criticized the United States and Britain for going to war without U.N. approval rather than allowing his team to continue its hunt for banned weapons.
In the interview, Blix said the war had contributed to a destabilization of the Middle East and a move away from democracy in the region, adding that even though Iraqis had been spared life under a dictator, it was at too high a cost.
"Bush declared war as a part of the U.S. war on terror, but instead of limiting the effects of terror, the war has laid the foundation for even more terror," Blix said.
Blix was scorned by the United States and Britain for failing to conclude Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction ahead of their invasion. But a year on, no such weapons have been found.
Blix, a lawyer and former Swedish foreign minister who at 75 now serves as chairman of Sweden's Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, retired from the United Nations (news - web sites) last June.

Ahhh, yes. More bloviating from the ever-objective Mr. Blix.
He makes John McCain look stable.

Clarke isn't the only one with a book out.

Don't you just love it when these snotty Europeans voice their opinion on a war that the United States is leading, paying for and protecting the people of Iraq without ANY help from them and their dwindling military? Disgusting.

Can I renounce my Swedish heritage or just renounce this idiot?!!
Put a plug in this moron's piehole and let's look at the facts, the Iraqis can now choose for themselves how they move forward after Saddam.

I wish I had the power to subject this creep to one of Saddam's torture chambers for few days. Then ask him if he feels "better off" when the torture stops.

It is people like Blix that makes me love western Europe so much. Arrogant, self-serving, self-rightous, cowards, and most importantly just down-right stupid.

So Mr. Magoo is more about $$$ than lives. How European of him.

Blix, McNeill, Clarke--all disgruntled losers that lost their jobs because their EGOS were crushed when they couldn't be in charge. Sour grapes! Blix would have been running self-importantly around Iraq for the next decade, drawing a huge salary and doing nothing but poisoning the waters internationally.

Better off with a tyrannical dictator, mass murdering psychopath at the helm. The removal of Saddam only highlights the fact that there is a mass movement of Islamic fundamentalism sweeping many Arab nations, whose goal is the destruction of the West. The war is engaged whether Hans Blix wants to believe it or not. Just look at Spain if you think appeasement will work with these fanatics. While we have been hoping this all would go away, they have been indoctinating their populations with lies and hatred, forming a generation of murderous bigots, nations of uneducated rabble. They cannot help their own nations except to try to ruin ours.

My Two cents... the U.N. know's exactly where the WMD's

One wonders just how large the payoffs by Saddam to Blix were? Their absence must be putting a genuine crimp in his lifestyle!

Blix is not an expert on Iraq nor any other foreign country! He really needs to shut up and try listening!

Hmm. Ex-
UN Inspector Hans Blix crying for the good old days of unrestricted pillow talk with Koffi, Jacques and Saddam.
