That is not a good idea. Its really inconvient having to always go back to the original sites; many require registration, which many people won't do. Including me.
The Washington Post requires your life story for its "free" registration.

They are all either copyrighted or in the process. I print them and mail them to myself for the post mark date and keep the envelope unopened. I email them from work to home. I submit them with the forms to them Library of Congress. And I note the date of posting on FR or anywhere else I may post them.
However I really like it when the DU'ers post my poems and act like they are important documents to be disected. What a bunch of morons.

So,does the group have a consensus, based on research?
I believe the "Whaaaa" entities are NOT allowed to forbid people from quoting excerpts from an article. This is especially true if we restrict the length of our postings and say things like "So and so said in the chicago Tribune.."blah.blah.'" The quote from the original person is fair game to use; it is part of the historical record.
The trick comes in when one tries to copy more than "excerpts" and Jim is right that the law and rulings are so vague and even contradictory, that one judge's fair use length is another judge's violation.
My point. They CANNOT stop anyone from quoting them, giving the reference. They MAY be able to argue violation of Copyright if exerpts are judged too long so as to be considered "stealing" their creative capital.

The folks on the LEFT really are uptight about all this "noise" over here on FR.
Thanks for the info.

It doesn't have to be YOUR life story. Just make up A life story. For the longest time, I was a 90+year old man. Then they got that complicated registration page, and I just don't care enough about what they have to say to make up a complete life story. I think my husband may have registered there, but I don't know the sign-on, so ... I don't bother. Too many sign-ons for too many sites makes this Mama crazy. The WP and a number of other sites have one less reader. (I guess two less because hubby won't bother unless a story is really, really intriguing.)

Duly noted and bookmarked. None of those names is really any surprise, anyway. I try to stay away from the liberals sites if possible.

Somehow none of this makes any sense.
1. The Internet (world wide web) is a free entity for the whole world to access and see.
2. What is the one thing that makes a website viable? HITS, and lots of them. So the internet gods invented LINKS. The best resource for HITS.
3. The media "borrows" material from each other all the time, but what they do is tag it. ie: ...an article in the NY Post said...., or ....according to the Daily Fish Wrap...
It just seems to me that once you expose something in writing to the public via the net, one could reasonably expect that it is now in the realm of "free domain" (is there such a thing?). The exception would be from sources where you have to subscibe to have access to the site.
Should I have had more coffee before I posted this?

These sites must be excerpted and linked only:
wral.comIs this a new development, Jim?
We here in NC have been posting from WRAL for years, and this is the first I've heard of any excerpt-only rule.
Thanks,

This is a list of people who are ashamed of what they publish. The idea that what they write and publish can be archived, is absolutely abhorrent to them. Yes. What slays me is the fact that all these news sites have opportunities to e-mail the articles all over the world..... but we can't post them and talk about them here? Explain *that* one.

Just to clarify, are you saying that the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reprinted the Washington Post article in toto? As in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review VIA the Washington Post?Well I didn't read the article at the WP to verify it was identical word-for-word.
But at the the Trib's website, they credited the author and the WP specificly in the byline.
So I believe that it was actually WP via the Trib.
To: Amelia; All
How is this being handled at other sites that post and discuss news? And are the publishers also complaining about those other sites? Bump for later reading and for further discussion of Amelia's questions.
