SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mayor Gavin Newsom sold his local business interests to oil heir Gordon Getty for $1.7 million earlier this year, the mayor's spokesman said.
The 36-year-old millionaire mayor, who took office Jan. 8, earlier announced his decision to get out of the businesses he co-owned in San Francisco, including the PlumpJack Cafe, the Balboa Cafe and the Matrix-Fillmore bar, to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

For those who are, this will come as no surprise. Newson's listed occupation on his application to run for mayor was simply designed to encourage uninformed, businessman/conservative/Republican crossover votes.

Hard not to be when you're presented as a no nonsense businessman, bankrolled by Getty, your campaign is guided by Brown, Burton, Feinstien and Lockyer and your family and business associates "own" the town.
In other words, it was a major 'meat market' bar.
(not that theres anything wrong with that)
Gordon Getty is a wine merchant. Getty produces, imports and sells wine, both on and off sale..
Gavin's involvement was his controlling interest in a management company that oversaw some of Getty's retail wine establishments and a very small financial interest in Getty's wine production and import businesses.
The answer is, he doesn't, as much as Newsom needs Getty.
