The San Francisco Police Department has sent a negotiator to talk down a man who is standing on a railing on the westbound side of the Bay Bridge near Treasure Island, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Virgil Aquilar.

Also assisting in the situation is the U.S. Coast Guard, which has sent two boats to the Bay Bridge "for any type of rescue and assistance should the man decide not to go back over the rail onto the auto deck,'' Coast Guard Petty Officer Gabriel Flesher said.

The New Yorker has an interesting article about the Bay Bridge Jumpers recently, only something like less than 10% survive.

It's a pretty long drop. Not to mention the sharks waiting at the end of it.

Caught the tail end of a radio newsreport about traffic snarled up massively. I bet this is why. Thanks for posting.

Kind of a sad article.

One person who jumped left a note behind and said that if one person smiled at them walking the whole way out there he/she wouldn't jump.

My husband was almost late for work because of this guy. I heard that traffic is backed up to Hilltop on the 80. Eek, what a mess. Of course he took the Richmond Bridge home yesterday and arrived hours late because of the hole in it.

He is a captain and hates when they jump from the GG Bridge because he has to wait with the remains until the Coast Guard comes. It's always a bad day when the bridge workers drop the flares.

Hope the negotiations go well. Maybe it's the guy who got fired last night on 'The Apprentice'.

Urban legend or not, if it was supposed to make me feel guilty, it failed.
