Fantastic point. I would stand in front of every camera I could to find help in locating my son. EVERY CAMERA.

Oh, good heavens, no, it's not the parents' fault.

We tell new parents it's an 18-year-committment but the truth is, it's forever...!

It is so emotionally gut wrenching to both love, fear and hate a family member.

Having gone through it, it gave me a better sense of what mental illness can do.

It is definitely something that many deal with, as seen on this thread.

It is real and it must be dealt with, but in a different way than a common criminal.

I would say the same about other crimes like pedophiles and the like, where mandatory actions should be taken to protect the general public.(castration)

It is a real and present problem on the entire planet.

You are the one who said the treatment for someone with a mental illness should be "kicked in the butt".

Yes, I have lived with somebody like this. Moreover, my grandmother died in 1941 shortly after she was confined to an "insane asylum". It's difficult for my mom to talk about, but from what I understand, the conditions were horrid. She was sent there by a doctor, when she in fact had a case of depression. She died of a heart attack soon after. Or that is the story the family was told at the time.

I have every right to disagree with your "kick 'em in the butt" way of treatment for mental illness.

Maybe you need to "get over yourself". You have NO idea what I've gone through in my lifetime.

Good heavens, I've never seen a smiley in the same line with that name before. I mean, other than the ones she used in her personal ad that she placed to try to find boyfriends to correspond with from prison.

I'll take it rather than leave it. It's all we've got until they come up with a better system. Perhaps over the next decade technology will improve also.

Its not the parents fault looking for their child. I agree.

But if it is proven their daughter lied then who is responsible for the costs? Clearly the co-ed can not repay the community so who does it come down to. Should the community eat the cost on this one?

Beren Since Apr 1, 2004

Beren hasn't created an about page.

Beren is a troll.

My question is what crime has she committed? She hasn't done anything to be locked up FOR. Sounds to me like she needs to take a semester or two off and get some therapy. I feel for the kid, but her life is far from over.

OOPS me bad....smiley should have been on another line in that I proved my point that people will stand in front of a camera and lie their asses off.

Sorry for that I in no way condone the behavior of that freak Susan Smith.

Yes, and now every parent has to pay the price. If I think it would help locate my child, I'd be willing to pay that price. They should've given her an oscar. Unfortunately now every parent of a missing child is met with skepticism. Very unfortunate. Jon Benet's parents could tell you about it. I'm not certain of their guilt. I'm sad to say that I doubted them right off the bat.

You're making some good points.

She may have an idea that she's not quite right, and made this up to cover herself.

I don't think you're understanding Tiamat.

A kick in the butt is a metaphor for behavioral modification, which IS an acceptable treatment for many a mental disorder. She does not mean (I'm positive!) that this is the only treatment that should be used.

A lot of people with mild mental illness behave far worse than they must because they are enabled and excused. I don't think Andrea Yates drowned her kids for that reason--she was psychotic and a kick in the butt would have done her no good at all.

Now Russell Yates...he needed a kick in the butt...but didn't get it in time.

The criminal justice system needs to improve regarding REAL abductions.

A child abducter does not get caught on his first attempt to harm a child so to speak. Therefore he/she is probably already a menace and has not been handled properly by society.

Take that Parnell in California. He got a few years only to get out of jail and solicite to ADOPT a young boy. Clearly the system failed the community by letting him out of jail once they had him on abductions already.

Wow - Travis, thanks a lot - I dug out the link for Adults with Asperger's and it sounds even MORE like Dad. Is there a medical test to confirm or deny it?
