John Belushi gets Hollywood star

From correspondents in Los Angeles 02apr04

US COMIC and actor John Belushi has been immortalised on Hollywood's glamorous Walk of Fame, 22 years after he died of a drug overdose.

The Blues Brothers actor's gilt-edged star on the famed walk was unveiled by his emotional brother, Jim Belushi, who asked Hollywood's Chamber of Commerce to honour the late comic. "It's a great, great day today," said the 49-year-old Belushi, whose big brother John would have been 55 if he had survived. "It's great to have this star. Today we are retiring John's jersey. He is a walk of famer, man."

The ceremony was attended by a star-studded cast of characters who had worked with hard-partying John Belushi including fellow Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase and movie star Ted Danson.

Belushi was 33 when he died after being injected with a "speedball" - a deadly combination of cocaine and heroin - in Hollywood's elegant Chateau Marmont hotel after a night out in 1982.

Like Chase and Akroyd, the actor was one of the original cast members of the US television comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, which is still on the air.

He also starred in movies such as the classic 1978 comedy Animal House, directed by John Landis, who also attended Thursday's ceremony.

The Apollo astronauts will forever be bigger stars than any Hollywood play-actors.

Condi Rice's job is to advise the president and help him make decisions that will hopefully save lives and help the U.S. These loser druggies chose acting and entertaining. If Condi Rice could sing and dance, she could get a star. I'd much rather have some crackhead getting a star on the walk, and keep Condi where she belongs, next to the president.

Who's to say we can't chip in and buy Condi a star of her own there? I don't expect the uproar over their discriminating against a black woman would be what they'd want, and it might be fun to do just to pi$$ 'em off. Though I'd rather see Jan Berry from Jan and Dean get one, if he hasn't already.

Personally, I'm a little contemptious of Hollywood. The freepers could probably chip in and get her a star, however, I doubt that she would want one, and considering who some of the lowlifes are who have stars, she deserves better then to have her name associated with a bunch of crack heads on a sidewalk.

Funny what Hollywood considers a high honor, I consider something akin to junk.

You go, Sonny. I'd sure like to know what your tag line means.

"Let them hate, so long as they fear".

Criteria For Star on the Walk of Fame

1. Professional achievement

2. Longevity of five years in the field of entertainment

3. Contributions to the community

The recipient must agree to attend the dedication ceremony.

There is a five-year waiting period after death for nominations of deceased individuals. The Committee does not necessarily select posthumous honorees each year.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce makes every effort to schedule a dedication ceremony on the date requested by the honoree. A 60 to 90 day lead period is needed for required permits, the manufacture of the star, and advance publicity.

All applications must include a bio (not exceeding two pages) and photo (see sample). Non-returnable samples of the nominee’s work may also be submitted (e.g., Recording category – music CD; Motion Picture – video cassette). The Committee does not accept signature petitions or postcards, letters, etc. First-time nominations not selected will automatically roll-over for another year. If not selected during the second year, the nominee must be re-submitted.

Please be advised that if your nominee is selected and the induction does not take place within five years of the selection date of June, 2004, the nominee must be re-submitted during another voting period.

Deadline for submission of applications is May 31, 2004. The sponsorship fee is $15,000 and is subject to change. For more information call (323) 469-8311.

Send submissions to Hollywood Walk of Fame, 7018 Hollywood, Hollywood, CA 90028.
