"We definitely depend on our awesome Jamaican workers," said St. Pierre, who runs Chatham Boat Co. with her husband Paul Avellar. "Most young [Americans] don't want to work. They don't have that drive that we used to have." Northcross said she has been working with state and federal officials and other tourism leaders on an emergency fix for this year and a long-term solution.

About 5,000 to 6,000 of the visas issued last year were for workers in about 650 businesses on Cape Cod and the islands......

I want to hear more complaining about unemployment numbers. I also want to hear about rising welfare roles

Uhhh ... Jose, I have news for you:

You're not in America. You're in Massachusetts.

"There's a real disconnect between the currently available jobs and the currently unemployed American."

The employers want to pay below the market rate for employees. The way to connect the currently available jobs and currently unemployed Americans is to pay what people are willing to work for. If they don't pay it, then the resorts will have to make due with less housekeeping and fewer customers.

We need to lower fuel prices on Nantucket too, so more tourists will come there and spend more time on the boats. (Sarcasm off)

The New England beaches have had lots of kids from Ireland coming for the summers. The summer season is short and the kids from New England no longer flood to the beaches looking for summer work. It used to be a right of passage to work at the beach for lots of teens and college students. It still may be for some. The Irish kids came by the plane load to work and are really good natured and a pleasure to deal with. The Atlantic City resort and casino
hotels have nuge amounts of foreign workers filling jobs.
Vietnamese,Bosnians and many other workers fill the ranks.
How else can the Social Security Ponzi Scheme keep going?
It cannot keep up with just American workers.

Don't want to make it political...

It is political and both political gangs are looking the other way on immigration.

The socialists (Dems) because it brings in people who if they stay need Govt. Services, and if they become citizens they will vote mostly for the socialists(dems) The Republicans won't address the problem because there are republican business people who want cheap labor, legal or illegal.

So this situation in this article is an example of business people who are normally republicans and the socialists(dems) working together to bring in more immigrants.

Clinton vigilant do anything about immigration and neither will Bush.

Don't be to critical of Kennedy on this one, he is just doing what those republican business owners want done - getting them cheap foreign labor. -Tom

I agree...without foreign workers the restaurant, roofing, and construction industries here would cease to function. (The entire crew that laid the Cox Cable lines in our neighborhood last fall was from El Salvador.)

My concern here is more for security than economics.

I just hope someone's checking to make sure there's not a snake in the picnic basket...

Hey, it might just be easier to go to California, take some of their illegals, charter some planes and bring them here.

After the summer, put them back on the planes, only this time send them back to Mexico.

Yes, these summer jobs used to be held by American college students.
Political aristocrats, like the Kennedy and Bush clans, won't be happy until they drive our younger generation into parity with Third World poverty levels.

Apparently some won't want to make the return trip.

ILLEGAL RESIDENT ALIENS
The INS estimated in February, 2003 that the illegal alien population in Massachusetts was about 87,000 residents.

US Representative William D. Delahunt and Senator Edward M. Kennedy were among the sponsors who filed legislation this week to allow an emergency increase of 40,000 visas, bringing the total of H-2B visas permitted this year to 106,000.

40,000 more jobs lost to foreigners - thank you, Teddy
Say it again - and again - and again....

Don't let them come. Make Massachusetts employers pay higher wages to attract poor black youths from the Bronx and then raise their prices to cover the increased wages, theft, lawsuits for assaults, costumer drop-off, etc...
