Since Ronald Shaver's arrival, Little Flock has grown, with an average of 1,400 people attending Sunday morning services. "He doesn't put himself up there, he puts Christ up there," said friend Steve Townson, a retired pastor.

Ronald Shaver didn't want to be a preacher.

I have often wondered why more organized conservatives don't enter nonpartisan school boad races as an informal slate. Perhaps the school board's unified supporters can still block such opposition.

This story reminds me of Mark Twain's adage about "First, God created idiots. Then school boards."

"Since then, school officials have drawn up a policy that would restrict school visitors to parents, grandparents and legal guardians. "

Seems like a reasonable restriction to me. If I were a parent, I would not want miscellaneous folks sitting in the cafeteria and talking to my kids, no matter who they were.

Such restrictions are the law where I live.

My understanding is that the restriction was specifically designed to exclude ministers from the campus. To accomplish that goal, the school board excluded virtually all except relatives. Anyone lunching with the ministers would be doing so out of free choice. I don't see the problem of allowing ministers on the campus. I see such as a benefit, not a detriment, to the education of the young.

Given the extent of sexual abuse of children by ministers and others, the restriction against everyone but parents and guardians seems appropriate to me.

Such a policy is already in place in most schools. We cannot have just anyone who wants to dropping by the schools and chatting up the students there. If you open it to ministers, then you are going to open another can of worms.

Say the local Wiccan leader, the Muslim cleric, or the Buddhist leader want to come? How about the local cult leader? All are classifiable as ministers.

School is for learning, not proselytization. The easiest way to prevent people you don't want to come to campus is to prohibit all such non-family visitors. That's why most schools have such restrictions.

I know. I volunteer at my local schools, giving lessons on my particular specialty. For me to do that, I had to be fingerprinted, tested for tuberculosis, and have a criminal background check. All that to spend an hour in a classroom doing a single lesson.

Better safe than sorry, eh?
