what in AQ's arsenal could possibly get close enough to an aircraft carrier that could destroy it?

A 727 (civilian colors) from Africa loaded with fuel and explosives.

Remember the damage caused to the ship when one missle cooked off under Senator McCain's aircraft?

It would still have to connect with the aircraft carrier - my guess is our professional sailors would knock it out of the sky before it connects.

Nothing in the air or under the sea is gonna get close with the E-2s and ASW assets fully deployed.

Surface threats likewise would be dispatched very quickly.

The only thing that would worry me is from within. A disgruntled muslim recruited by alQaeda is always possible. I just hope that after the muslim threw the grenades into the tent in Iraq, all those aboard our ships were screened psychologically for any of these kind of tendencies!

At any rate, it would take quite a weapon to destroy a carrier from within...but with all that fuel, someone (or one person and his cohorts) with evil on their mind could create quite the mayhem.
