Recount ongoing in congressional race

Times staff reports

Congressman Ciro Rodriguez (D-San Antonio) gained three more votes Friday in the recount of ballots ordered by opponent Henry Cuellar of Laredo.

After a recount of votes cast in two of the 11 counties that comprise Congressional District 28, Rodriguez picked up one vote in Wilson County and two in Atascosa Friday, increasing his margin of victory to 148 votes, according to the Austin-based Quorum Report.

“Most eyes are focused on the recount in Bexar County. Both candidates and the local Democratic Party have agreed not to recount votes recorded on the touch screen machines used for in-person early voting and on Election Day,” according to the Quorum Report.

These types of electronic machines do not leave a paper trail.

The recount of mail-in and provisional ballots in Bexar will take place next Wednesday.

On Monday, Frio, McMullen and La Salle counties will recount. On Tuesday, Webb and Zapata counties will recount. Wednesday will be Hays County and Thursday will be Guadalupe and Comal counties.

“The recount in Hays County could be interesting because the county used punch cards. That raises the possibility of disputes over the infamous hanging chads,” the Quorum Report stated.

In the March 9 primary election, Rodriguez defeated Cuellar by 126 votes, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s office.

After the canvassing of votes, however, the margin jumped to 145 votes.

Rodriguez (or Cuellar) will be challenged in the fall by one of two obscure Republican hopefuls (named Canseco and Hopson)in this heavily Democrat district. The Republican runoff is set for April 13.
