President Bush, hunting for votes in hotly contested Sun Belt states, said Friday his administration is working toward wiring homes throughout America with high-speed Internet access by 2007.

"We've got to make sure this country's on the leading edge of broadband technology," Bush said. It is vital, he added, to open "new highways of knowledge" to spread innovations in education, medicine and other areas, and keep the country competitive in global trade.

And to give every American citizen the ability to have high-speed access to Freerepublic.com, if they so choose. When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to bypass the liberal media . . .

At last, the president is modiifying the economic message to a much broader scope than just the jobs figure. For the 95% employed out there, the key to measure financial security can come in many forms - size of 401K, size of home equity, size of mortgage payments etc..

No one could argue the housing market today is worse than that of 2000. Indeed, I can bet my farm on the fact that a lot of homeowners have seen their home value up 20 to 40% during these four yrs. Or at least the mortgage payments are way down (if they do the refi) vs those four yrs ago.

Bush get a lot of support in the Married voters, he losses big in the single not married subgrp. For the married voters, home ownership is a key characteristic.

Minority homeownership is a way to get the minorities, esp. the hispanics, leaning more and more R. If bush can win 40%+ of the hispanic votes, the dims will be in deep deep trouble. Hispanics, esp. those been in this country for awhile, are more likely small biz owners than other minority grps, these folks own small biz and homes and they vote. GOP could peel these folks off fairly easily on a pro-growth, pro-family, pro-values agenda.

As for the broadband stuff, I wish the president had done that immediately after the bust of the nasdaq, but we have 9/11 to deal with, too bad. Broadband access will increase the demand of telecom equipment, fiber optics, VOIP stuff like that..all these things are made by companies like cisco, jnuiper networks, jdsu, sonus network, lucent, nortel - if we are all connected, we will set a new wave of growth for companies making the telecom gears, along side with the e-merchants like yahoo, ebay etc. Bottomline - this broadband access proposal will "reflate" the telecom bust must faster than it would, and this will benefit the stock market big time, which in return will help the sentiments of the economy and the nation's financial health.

jmho.
