Top Republicans in Congress sought Friday to declassify two-year-old testimony by former White House aide Richard Clarke, suggesting he may have lied this week when he faulted President Bush (news - web sites)'s handling of the war on terror.
"Mr. Clarke has told two entirely different stories under oath," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said in a speech on the Senate floor.
The Tennessee Republican said he hopes Clarke's testimony in July 2002 before the House and Senate intelligence committees can be declassified. Then, he said, it can be compared with the account the former aide provided in his nationally televised appearance Wednesday before the bipartisan commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

This could be huge, somehow I suspect the DemocRATS will fight this.
One question I have. Sinces Clarke's 9/11 Commission testimony differed so much from that of Powell, Armitage, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and presumably, Rice shouldn't an investigation of perjury be opened up imediatly on a five. Either Clark lied to the commission or Powell, Armitage, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Rice did.
The American people have a right to no.
Somehow I suspect that Bent-Penista, Rohlmer and GoreLick will not be pushing for it.

Republicans fighting back? Can this possibly be true? It's about time the Republicans played the hardball the Dems always accuse them of.

...and the horrified response from the other side of the aisle will be "But this isn't about Clarke, it's about the President's handling of the truth and of the safety of this country!"
To which we calmly respond, "No, it's not: it is about ethics, personal gain, perjury, and whether Mr. Clarke lied to the Congress, the 911 Commission, and to the people of this country while in the duty of protecting us all. The President is the only one really taking action against terrorism: you people have been trying to stop it for the past decade."

The Rats are now getting more than they had bargained for.
The news media and Democrats may soon drop the Dick Clarke story like they did with "AWOL" and move on to a new smear.

His presence on the commission is an abomination; he's about as rabidly partisan as they get - why didn't they put Carville on the commission, too?

I agree, except why must Republicans always behave "calmly?"
Maybe that's our mistake.

They didn't need to. They already had another clintonite on there.

Porter Goss is a tough customer and a former spook. Seemingly, he has decalred war on the lefts newest operative, Clarke, and I am elated.
And any time anybody mentions that Clarke is a "loyal public servant', remind them that Clarke moved from "loyal public servant" to political operative and opportunist when he used 9/11 to cash in monetarily and politcally.
Political operatives who whine about hardball politics can kiss me where the sun don't shine.

I agree, except why must Republicans always behave "calmly?"No one likes to see potential or actual goobermint leaders acting uncalmly.
The Democrats' 40% are sustaining themselves on sheer, raw hatred. The rest of the electorate is going to be heartily sick of them come November 2nd, 2004.

Frist will roll over as usual. Nothing will happen.Frist isn't making it happen, Porter Goss is and Frist has no power over Mr Goss at all. It's gonna happen.
It's gotta happen, if the left wounds Bush on the WOT we lose big time. This issue needs to go to the mats.

Well, in this case, I suspect the RATs are gonna go absolutely ballistic over this, by contrast. But yeah -- in general, I'd love to see more emotion and passion for our case.

Maybe Clarke is working for Bush. What is he thinking? Maybe Clarke and Beers are trying to ruin Kerry from within. This thing is certifiably insane.

I'll never forget when the GOP fellows in Florida rioted to protect the ballots. I've never been so proud.
I had just been talking about how Republicans are hardworking family people who just aren't the type to take it to the streets when this occurred.
We need to take it to the streets more often. It scares the hell out of the dems when we fight back.
(Unfortunately I'll need alot of notice in order to find a babysitter and make sure the mini van is all gassed up LOL)
