A former White House counterterrorism official apologized yesterday for government failures in the September 11 terrorist attacks, but his credibility was challenged during a public hearing.

"Those entrusted with protecting you failed you. And I failed you," said Richard A. Clarke, the former national coordinator for counterterrorism in the Clinton and Bush administrations.

I think SELF SERVING is the word that best describes this guy. So he's made himself into a minor hero for a day and he's made sure he is going to sell his book and make money. Beyond that...he's just a legend in his own mind but not in reality. He will be forgotten about in 3 or 4 days.

Mr. Clarke testified that senior Bush administration officials, including National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, ignored his warnings about the threat of al Qaeda in the first seven months of the administration.

Yea, I see some common ground with Dubya, and his cabinet, with their line of reasoning and my own reasoning.

I too, ignore pests while I'm working, I swat them and discard of their remains when they become bothersome!

One report said Mr. Clarke was "a controversial figure" who was a "skilled operator," but was viewed as "abrasive" by his colleagues.
"Some officials told us that Clarke had sometimes misled them about presidential decisions or interfered in their chain of command," the report said, noting that several colleagues told Mr. Berger that they "wanted Clarke fired."

The way Clarke pretty much insulted anyone that dare to question his actions .. I don't expect his 15 minutes of fame will last that long

...he regularly briefed President Bush directly, a process that differed from President Clinton, who was briefed by officials such as Mr. Clarke.
Wasn't it Clinton's first term CIA director (forgotten name) who never had one, not even one, face to face with Clinton in four years ?

Former Central Intelligence Agency Director James Woolsey recently told the London Telegraph that, during his two years in the administration, he managed to secure only two conversations with Clinton. Two conversations -- not meetings.
