bring the pistol in for a "safety check" at the local sheriff's office
I know what it sounds like in name but what, in reality, is a "safety check"?
Sounds like a lot of hassle setup just to discourage firearm ownership.
A couple of weeks ago I went out to lunch from work and decided to stop by and check out some handguns. I found a .45 I liked and also found a .22 revolver for my daughter. Filled out the federal "yellow sheet", waited a couple of minutes while they called in the federal "Brady Check", and out the door I went with the two weapons in hand.
Ended up that I didn't like the .45 so I took it back last week. They sold it on consignment for me (I didn't have time to fool with it & it creates a paper trail that I don't own the thing anymore - just in case it ends up north of here sometime). Yesterday I went and picked up my money (ended up costing me about $50.00 all total) and picked out a different .45. I'll try it out this weekend.
Sounds like all of the "red tape" you guys have would have really put the damper on my shopping.
I guess it is all in attitude. It sounds like in your state you have to show just cause why they should allow you to own a firearm; in mine, they have to show just cause why you can't own a firearm.
Does that sound correct?

They call it a "safety check" and they do look over the pistol and they check numbers on the various parts and record them.
You are required to carry a small wallet-size green card when you carry the pistol with you, the card coming from the green sheet that is filled out then you make a pistol purchase.
With the concealed pistol license, some of this legwork is eliminated--I believe--I haven't purchased a pistol lately.
I'm not sure if you have to bring it in for a "safety check" when you have a concealed pistol license. Probably, but I'm sure any dealer would let you know.
As I recall--it's been a few years--on my first purchase, I had to take a quiz, about ten questions long, like do you or don't you report the theft of a pistol. You do. I can't remember all of the questions, but I answered on the side of caution for all and got 'em all right.
People feared that the world would end with the new concealed pistol laws. The world continued and so far it works fine and it is easier for the public to acquire a concealed pistol license. My wife and I have a license.
For me, I can take the four-wheeler off the truck, throw my fishing gear on the rack, shoulder a pistol, and go fishing.
I can have a pistol in my truck, without it being in a case, as I head out to the catfish hole (actually trout stream or lake)and I drive from one spot to another without having to store everything for the short trip.
My wife is enjoying to learn how to shoot. I have a Calico that's a lot of fun. Haven't tried out the .50 cal, yet.
She has problems with the semi-autos except for the .22s, unless I chamber a round.
