I don't know much about this aspect of the law, but I would think that if he confessed, agreed to life w/o parole, that it would save a ton of money and heartache.
Can he confess to first degree?
I'm sure Amber, all burglars and the local Satanists would be relieved at not having to testify. Sharon and the Rochas can be told what details they want to know about the investigation, but would be spared having Laci's last moments broadcast all over the media.
But I may be whitling in the wind, what education can you legal eagles give us?

Especially given the "extra charges" to be incurred to accomodate the Satanists who will only testify after midnight and before sunrise.
