CAIRO, Egypt - Anti-Israel demonstrations erupted in the Middle East today after Israels killing of the spiritual leader of the Islamic militant group Hamas, and hopes for recent Arab moves to reinvigorate the regions peace process were dimmed by shouts for revenge. Arab rage over the death of Sheik Ahmed Yassin, killed by an Israeli helicopter gunship at daybreak as he left a mosque near his Gaza Strip home, reverberated across the Middle East.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who had been using his influence to press ahead with peace efforts, called it cowardly.
Asked about its likely impact on the peace process, Mubarak replied: What peace process, when the situation is on fire?
Mubarak cancelled already controversial plans for a few Egyptian legislators to participate in a celebration Tuesday in the Israeli parliament of the 25th anniversary of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. The treaty was the first between Israel and an Arab state.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat declared three days of mourning for the quadriplegic sheik and said the Israelis had crossed all red lines. His prime minister, Ahmed Qureia, called the killing one of the biggest crimes that the Israeli government has committed.
Meanwhile, envoys from the United Nations, United States, Russia and the European Union assembled for talks at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Monday night, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said Monday.
Maher said that in his talks with U.S. envoy William Burns hours after the assassination, Mubarak said there needed to be a crystal-clear position on the peace process under these circumstances.
Burns will meet with the European Unions Marc Otte, Russian envoy Alexander Kluging and U.N. representative Terje Roed-Larsen.
The United States, United Nations, Russia and the EU make up what is called the quartet of powers that produced the road map peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians in mid-2003.
Mohammed Mahdi Akef, the leader of Egypts Muslim Brotherhood, the oldest and most influential Islamic movement in the Middle East, issued a warning to all Americans and Israelis.
There can be no life for the Americans and Zionists in the region, Akef told the pan-Arabic television Al-Jazeera. We will not rest until they (Israelis) are expelled from the region.
U.S. officials urged all sides top exercise restraint.
Arab political analysts called Yassins killing an affront to Egypts efforts to bring about a cease-fire between Palestinian militant groups and Israel, and warned that the move will only fuel violence.
This is an embarrassment to Egypt, said Diaa Rashwan, an expert on radical Islam with Egypts Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. Egypt was directly involved in bringing Hamas and Jihad closer to the Palestinian authority and bringing about a cease-fire. Targeting Yassin is a direct blow to these efforts.
The Yemeni Foreign Ministry said all efforts to peacefully resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict collapsed with Yassins killing.
Jordans King Abdullah II, another important broker in the peace process, said he was pained by the killing. Jordanian Prime Minister Faisal al-Fayez said it would escalate the circle of violence and instability in the region.
More than 5,000 Sudanese, including Islamic opposition leader Hassan Turabi, went to the Hamas press office in Khartoum to express condolences, witnesses said.
About 7,000 students demonstrated in Cairos Al-Azhar University, a leading theological school, while about 3,000 at Sana University in Yemen accused the United States of giving the green light to Israel to assassinate Sheik Ahmed Yassin.
Thousands of Palestinians protested near the southern Lebanon city of Sidon and the northern city of Tripoli, burning tires and homemade Israeli flags. Tripoli mosques blared Quranic verses.
In Kuwait, one of Americas closest allies in the Arab world, the prime minister, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, predicted violence will increase.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi blamed international indifference to previous Israeli actions against the Palestinians for Yassins killing.
Then put THIS in yer turban..you cowardly cave dwellers.
Nobody says that John Dillinger was assassinated. If someone did they would sound crazy.
Wake up America. Cleanse this Nation.
No arguments here.
Too bad. Stop blowing up bus loads of civilians and you won't have that problem.
Cowards.
All terrorist vermin should be exterminated thusly.
