Soldiers WERE SPIT ON During Vietnam War
Alvy's Forum ^

Posted on 03/22/2004 5:40:26 AM PST by Jon Alvarez

I share this info with you and invite any of you to share more stories, etc. The left is now trying to re-write history AGAIN (WMD vs 1441 as reason for going to war with Iraq)

I found at least one soldier's story where he was spit on 3 times in SF while in uniform. The leader of the Syracuse Peace Council seemed to take issue with my sign about them spitting on the troops. He said that it is an urban legend, that no troops were spit on during Vietnam. I just ran across another leftist who tried to make the same claim, so I found the info I posted at the link.

Please, add your proof, too. They spit on our troops then, it won't happen again.

Did you see the story in yesterday's Post-Slander on Page B-7 re: the Saturday rally
at Clinton Square?

But even more so, did you see Cammeo's disgusting cartoon on the editorial page?
--An American flag covered coffin against a black background and the script says:
Are you better off now that you were one year ago?

Most of the vet wanna-bees talk about the spitting. I've heard dozens of the stories over the years. The real vets, like my two-tour brother, tell me it's mostly urban legend (notice the mostly). Anyone who dared to spit on a grizzled, war-tested GI would likely wind up with their teeth separated from their mouth.

Bull! While I was treated pretty well on both my returns from Viet Nam (1967, 68), things had changed when I returned from Okinawa in 1970.
My first encounter with this behavior was at San Francisco International. As I entered the terminal, a very attractive young women with a very sweet smile approached me and said she wanted to welcome me back.
Her face then distorted into a mask of pure hate, and she launched a luggie at my face. Fortunately she had become so animated that it missed. I also had no trouble finding a seat with plenty of elbow room on the aircraft - no one sat near me.

My brother-in-law did 3 tours of duty in Vietnam and was returned back to the states on a stretcher. He said as he was laying on the dock in California (don't remember the city) waiting to be transported a young girl either in her late teens or early twenties walked up to him and called him a baby killer and spat in his face. This incident and later incidents like it prompted him to throw away the medals he earned.

Ed died January 20th 2004 at the age of 56 from a blood clot after surgery. He had numerous health problems as a result of agent orange exposure and became very disillusioned at how this country treated its war veterans. He said that if he ever had a son that he would not encourage that son to go into the military due to the fact that this country does not keep its promises to veterans. He spent almost 20 year trying to get help from the VA for agent orange related illnesses.

I used the word "mostly" because I was aware that it happened, being an activist back in that period of time.

I also recall that spitters paid a price, usually. They weren't lined up on jetways spitting on soldiers without consequence.

An American Indian vet, whom I worked with for a couple of years, loved to recount his spit story until the boss, who never mentioned his time in Vietnam, finally dressed the guy down by asking him what color his coming out ribbon was. The "vet" couldn't answer him.

I served three tours in Vietnam, returning all three times to San Francisco. I was not disrespected in any way nor did I ever see anyone else hasseled. SF

" Anyone who dared to spit on a grizzled, war-tested GI would likely wind up with their teeth separated from their mouth."

You got that right! I remember seeing guys arriving from Nam walking off their planes at JFK terminal still wearing their dirty BDUs with mud still on their shoes. No one messed with them. I believe the spitters liked the Class A uniform better. The same mentality existed in Albany NY during a Dem rally (Hillary of course) involving a Police color guard. Nothing was done about it.

It was on TV almost every night. They showed troops surrounded by people who spit on them and threw eggs at them.

Yeah, I reread your post after I posted mine and saw the "mostly" in there. Sorry about that!

I certainly hope those young soldiers did "educate" the spitters!

I was just a little bit too young to really pay attention to what was going on.

NOT TRUE! If you watched the news at that time you saw it almost every night. Gangs of protestors surrounding vets in uniform shouting "baby killers" and throwing eggs at them and spitting on them.

There were mobs of protestors in those days, dirty hippies and "flower children" in their VW buses. Unbathed, filthy, drugged up hippies and they were mean and vicious and almost tore apart this country.

Most of the university professors today were a part of this cadre.

I just want to say thank you for serving, coming home, and remaining engaged in our country's political life (i.e. participating here). I know this one post can't make up for the anguish you must have felt that day, but it's a start.

We are forever in your debt.

Good point about the Class A uniforms. What I saw was usually 2 or 3 guys in Class A's surrounded by 30 or 40 protestors.

At SFO, a bunch of us were greeted with heckling and spitting. We just ignored it

On our return, 6 of us shared a taxi from Oakland Army Terminal to SFO. During the ride we stopped at a red light. A Special Forces Capt., riding shotgun said "Wait for me" to the cabby, and stepped out of the cab.

He ran over to a hippy with a peace sign Tee shirt, and without so much as a word, cold cocked the kid. Laid him out, came back to the cab, and off we went.

A year in VN built up a lot of dislike.

Thanks, Ronnie, you know I have some making up to do. Maybe I'm too old to volunteer now. A guy watches life go by and then realizes the people who were really making a difference had camo and grease paint on their faces. I had books under my arms...
