Believe it or not, we put into Funchal at the end of one exploration leg. The company arranged at get a charter flight into Lisbon in a couple of days. The airport had a short, crowned runway, with water at both ends! Either you took off or you swam.

It was a pretty little island with lots of short locals. Island diet, I suppose. I bought some of their famous lace. Madeira wine is fortified with brandy, but I guess you found that out! LOL

I would have liked to tour Lisbon (I am a geologist by training and the Lisbon earthquake was one of great historic importance), but they were having communist trade union strikes and riots, so a few of us traveled in the coutryside instead.

My wife was from New Zealand of the Ormond family. Anthony Zino who helped form the Maderia Wine Association was married to someone in her family. We had a good time in Maderia. I remember that airport. Right before we got there a Swiss Air DC8 crashed because they ran out of fuel before they could find the airfield when it was socked in. Some of the passengers swam to shore before the rescue effort got started. (It crashed about a mile off of the Island). Right after that an Air Italia 727 crashed on the runway. It broke in half and the 1st class section and cockpit kept going and went off the end of the runway. They pushed the remaining wreckage off the runway and a day later they hear someone moaning in the wreck. It was one of the stewardess that they missed.

Our trip was during the Winter of 77/78. We were in Maderia in January 78. We used to eat a lot at the resturant that was the cave on the beach.

An interesting thing during that times when the socialist took over, the Azores actually considered succession and being put under US control and protection. One of my dreams was to go to the Azores on the boat and get a US civil service job. My short second marriage put an end to that along with a lot of other things.

When it came to adequate blood supply to support my brain and other organs of the body, I was always in short supply. I could supply blood as needed to some parts and the other parts had to shut down.

Ah.

Try spending a couple of weeks in the Rocky Mountains. That might help. :)

Leftists are scum, hence their disgusting and uncivilized behavior. Even the elitist high society ones have an element of crudeness and vulgarity.

Many of these people are just paid hacks. If you look in the newspaper want ads a few weeks prior to these events, you will notice ads calling for the hiring of "activists". These are the "activists" and will get a paycheck for their efforts. Sometimes they will even be paid right there on the street after the events. Others will be hired for the summer and receive a salary. It's all in the want ads. A helicopter reporter for a SF station used to point this out until he was "retired".

Notice how most of the signs are professionally made? Real grass roots activists make their own signs.

Follow the money and it will lead to another tax exempt, non-profit organization, that should have it's status revoked.

My parents live there, and no, they've got their hands full with my teenage brother right now.

Have you seen the Brain Terminal video of these same protesters in January? They were at Al Gore's infamous Global Warming speech (on the almost-coldest day in history!).

Brain Terminal interviewed them and...Voila!...there's the same guy featured in the picture at the top of this thread! (The one on the left). Get a load of this guy's thinking:

Brain Terminal Video

It takes a while to load, but it's worth it.

They come from Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell. They don't have to actually function because they get paid $100,000 for a nine month "year" to hide in an office and write "peer reviewed" books that no one, except other "peers" actually reads. Occasionally, they will appear on ABCNBCCBSCNN and condemn non-socialist governments for not offering enough funding for "educational" study.
