Willie, Castro was succesful because he lied.

Castro promised to overthrow Fulgencio Batista who had seized power illegally, restore the Cuban constitution, and conduct free elections. Once he seized control, he did not do any of the above.

His supporters defected as soon as they saw what a monumental mistake they had made, Castros's primary support came from the middle class in Cuba. The people who helped Castro had no economical issues.
