Great story about the bank robbers. What sort of range did the Schützenfeiern have when they opened up on the guys?

Pick up a good rifle, learn to use it well, as the Swiss do, and keep it handy should trouble arise. And if that comes to pass, use it as effectively as can be expected of a people whose national character reflects precision, effecience and a certain ruthlessness.

See the Swiss military manual on *Total Resistance* by the Swiss Major Vion Dach for tactical and technical details. The Swiss camo uniforms, somewhat mockingly referred to as *Alpenflage* in many US surplus catalogues, also work very well in many wooded and urban/brickwork settings.

Their cheese and some wines are not bad either. I can't recall any notable Swiss beers, but I've probably had some without noting them as either spectacularly good or putridly bad, so they're likely still okay.

I wasn't at the locale where it occurred. But the folks at Thun were shooting on a 500-meter range, and the winning groups were covering a spread of aroud 100 CM, about 4 inches. Those old boys can shoot those things.

The open iron sights on my Mauser had me at a distinct disadvantage. That made a good excuse, anyway.

Alot of this is time-consuming and requires you to actually work for the right to have a weapon...but perhaps this would weed out alot of problems in the US.

Isn't that assuming everyone would follow the rules? Criminals, by definition, don't follow the rules. An extensive education/registration system would do little for gun crime.

What if anything could you tell us about that Stgw57/Sig510? Is there any conceivable way to buy one of them??

You'll find discussion of the Stgw57 and SIG-AMT rifles *here.* DSA Arms in Barrington, IL 60011, the folks who make the nicely-rebuilt semiauto versions of the Austrian Stgw 58 FN-FAL rifle, have offered Stgw 57 parts kits in the past- they can be found in both the PE57 7,5 Swiss or 7,62 NATO chamberings. But either would do nicely, and a SIG-AMT semiauto receiver can be used, though barrel change on the things is a major undertaking and not for the unskilled. The complete guns do turn up for sale every now and again.

Thanks.

Another interesting discovery here: the ogive of that Swiss bullet is substantially different from that of modern American hunting bullets. The max col of the k31 cartridges is given in books as 3.059 and Swiss surplus ammo appears to be close to that; to get the bolt to close over a cartridge loaded with a Sierra 165 gr gameking, col is about 2.905.

I'll take any excuse I can get. But as I always say, any of my rifles can shoot better than I can hold.

Even the No. 5 Jungle Carbine . . . well, maybe not THAT one . . . :-D
