The California Department of Parks and Recreation has quietly purchased a piece of the Sutter Buttes in the Sacramento Valley, one of the state's most coveted properties.
The state has been interested in buying the land for decades -- a 1929 report first urged the purchase and protection of the buttes -- and seized the opportunity to acquire it last fall.
