"If people increasingly substitute the Web for their old media before a robust economic model for the Web evolves, the economic effect could be devastating for journalism

That made him about 39-40 when MTV started. I remember seeing an article where Martha Quinn said she wouldn't let her kids watch MTV. Too bad they swithed from showing music videos to showing nihlistic lifestyles.

Who could forget Video Killed The Radio Star by Buggles or Roly Poly Fish Heads? Two other videos that got plenty of airplay in the early days of MTV. :D

Between the ending of SNL and the Tom Snyder Show was Don Kirschner's thing. Some of the bands were pretty good. Awkward, but good.

I think Kirschner deserves much of the credit for MTV's launch. Soul Train too.

Good points all. Seems like there were 2 Duran Duran vids on all the time (Girls on Film was one), and a few more by other artists (whom I've zoned out on).

That was before the 4 gazillion Genesis vids showed up.... :)

Thanks a lot. Bringing up those early 80's MTV songs put "I Think I am Turning Japanese" into my head. I really think so.

My husband and I are only 30. Yet, when he was talking to some people he delivers to, they started talking about the song "Like A Virgin". My husband mentioned Madonna sang the song. Someone else said, "Oh. I remember her. My mom used to watch her on MTV when I was little." Did it make my husband feel ancient.

That Dire Straights video came out at the same time Prince's "Little Red Corvette" and "Doves Cry" came out, back in 84 I think. Not a good time for music IMHO.

The rush for video destroyed creative process. All that mattered was imagery.
