When we were homeschooling in Texas I started a Journalism Class - we had 15 kids ranging from age 10 to 15.
The class met every week and I published a Monthly Newsletter incorporating anything the kids wanted to submit. We had prayers, poems, and even an article on Beanie Babies.
Each month we chose someone in town to research and interview. One week the kids formulated questions to ask, then the next week we met with the individual for a group interview. Over the months we met the class interviewed a County Judge, the Chief of Police, and the Chief of the Fire Department.
It was a fun class and a great way to get the kids out in the community so we could show off their intellect and good manners!

Gone are the days when homeschoolers had to wave goodbye while their public school friends went off the the prom??
Well then goodbye the whole point of homeschooling.

My daughter is in a charter school precisely because there's no prom and no "sexuality training" (which is what I call school dances). If we could homeschool, we would; but it seems to me that the whole point is to concentrate the child on what is important: learning, learning, and learning.
To: PolitBase
Are you opposed to any form of dancing?
To: chance33_98
None of that awful rap music hopefully.
To: WhyisaTexasgirlinPA
Goodness no -- dancing is fine. But do they need to do it now? Those of us who are opposed to what's happening in the public school system shouldn't try to encourage our kids to "be like" public school kids. In my case I'm opposed to the obsession with sexuality and experimentation. I'd rather that my daughter spend time with her science projects than buying dresses for the prom.

As a graduate or homeschooling I often use to get asked 'What about socialization?' and I would always respond, 'Why would I want to be a socialist?'

I hope that your Charter School is a good experience for your kids.
To: TalonDJ
Good one.
To: TalonDJ
LOL....good line..... I always say that if my son can't "share his crayons" when he's 18, I'll worry about socialization then........ ;^)
To: TalonDJ
Heh, socialization was never the challenge. For us, it was being at home often enough to really qualify as homeschoolers! I did more math lessons on the way to chess classes, or studying for Spanish tests on the way to biology, or memorizing Shakespeare for my homeschool co-op classes on breaks from my community college math classes...

In an effort to close the gap on the socialization myth, California Homeschoolers today are announcing plans for a statewide homeschool prom scheduled for this April. At present, there are an estimated 800,000 to 1.2 million homeschoolers in the U.S., and the number is growing.
Yeah, I'm sure the organizers sat together in a room and conspired on how dispel the socialization myth by way of a prom. Personally, I'm always looking behind my backing, hoping to refute stereotypes about homeschoolers.
There's absolutely no way these people are organizing a prom for...fun. /sarcasm

We're doing the cost comparisons at the grocery store! lol
