From the other thread:

I'm Pitzer College, class of 95. Been getting emails on this "hate crime" for days. I sooooo haven't been giving a damn about it. But this is hilarious.

My latest email:

******************************************************************* Alumni Newsbytes Distribution List ******************************************************************* We apologize to all alumni who received a handful of emails last week following our announcement regarding the hate crime that took place in Claremont. We experienced a glitch with our email server which allowed anyone on the recipients list the ability to send email through the distribution list. The Alumni Office would also like to offer our sincere apologies to Jeanne Gural '00 graduate of the New Resources program. Because of this glitch, Jeanne was placed in a situation of having a private message publicly displayed. This alumni-newsbytes list is intended for limited communication from the Alumni Office only, and is not meant to be a discussion distribution list, and we apologize for the barrage of emails generated last week. The Alumni Office encourages open discussion, debate and the sharing of thoughts and feelings, and we invite you to make use of the Alumni Talk Discussion Forum: Please use this place for thoughtful and respectful exchange and dialogue in the Pitzer spirit. ******************************************************************* Recent Events In Claremont - UPDATE ******************************************************************* Press release from the Claremont Police Department: HATE CRIME INCIDENT ON MARCH 9TH, 2004 Detectives from the Claremont Police Department and Agents from the FBI are continuing to follow-up on many leads regarding the hate crime incident that occurred on 3-9-04 at the Claremont Colleges. As a result of the continuing investigation, several witnesses to the incident have come forward and provided significant information. The Claremont Police Department is urging any additional witnesses or anyone with information relating to this incident to contact either Lieutenant Stan Van Horn or Detective Eric Huizar at (909) 399-5420.

As the investigation continues Pitzer administration, faculty and students continue to explore issues related to tolerance and to discuss ways that an academic community can address these issues in our world.

Quote from Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley at a rally on the Mounds last Wednesday: "These events are tragic, disturbing and unacceptable. They have created a climate of fear in people and made us less secure in our community. The hate crime that occurred last night deeply affects our mission and personal safety. The vicious, hateful crime was designed to destroy the heart of our community, but as long as I am president of this college I will not let it happen. As one faculty member reminded me, we are the conscience of the Claremont Colleges consortium. I believe we are the leader. People who commit these kinds of acts will not succeed in their aim."

As the investigation continues Pitzer administration, faculty and students continue to explore issues related to tolerance and to discuss ways that an academic community can address these issues in our world. The first thing you can do is make a call for honesty. Quote from Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley at a rally on the Mounds last Wednesday: "These events are tragic, disturbing and unacceptable. They have created a climate of fear in people and made us less secure in our community." If this act did all that damage, then whan Prof Dunn did was wholly unacceptable, stirring up fear and mistrust. She should be usmmarily fired for her extremely anti-social and divisive act.

The hate crime that occurred last night deeply affects our mission and personal safety. Then another reason to fire the professor. The vicious, hateful crime was designed to destroy the heart of our community, but as long as I am president of this college I will not let it happen. Any professor willing to destroy the heart of the community is unfit to be on the faculty.

As one faculty member reminded me, we are the conscience of the Claremont Colleges consortium. I believe we are the leader. People who commit these kinds of acts will not succeed in their aim." Since the aim of the perpetrator was to draw attention to herself, in future it would be important not to aggrandize victims of these crimes, nor assume that they are real 'hate crimes' at all until it is proven so. In future, take the acts for what they are - vandalism. But any professor willing to commit even vandalism is unfit to be a teacher.
